Discuss 2391-10 in the Electrician Courses : Electrical Quals area at ElectriciansForums.net

Just done my 2391-10 and found it pretty tough.. Anyone else out there do it tonight? What is a statutory document that governs the distribution network? Is it the electricity at work regulations?

How did people find the exam who sat it tonight? I didn't like the question regards what are two supply characterisics that can ONLY be found out via enquiry to DNO? Seems a bit ambigious. The Voltage drop calculation was resistance x amps right? Seemed a bit simple for 8 marks!

With the dno question i put, type and rating of suppliers protective device.

and for the volt drop i did exactly the same and was wondering the same thing 8 marks for such an easy question :S

Sounds like you did the right thing with the DNO question but I think that is missleading, If the type and rating is on the fuse cover (which it normally is) then you don't need to contact DNO. Crap question!

I did the same thing for volt drops although I probably spent more time thinking what the hell am I missing here? 8 marks for that seemed crazy given how difficult the first half of the paper was.

I put down nominal voltage and nominal frequency as 2 supply characteristics that can only be found out via enquiry to DNO as what you will be measuring at the origin of the installation will not necessarily be the nominal voltage/frequency they are supplying. That was my theory anyway! I know this is a bit pedantic as we all know that nominal voltage in the UK is 230V AC. I think it's a typical C&G question that's designed to trip you up basically.

My thinking was that the type and rating of the supplier's fuse would normally be on the fuse cover.

Spot on,the Pfc and Ze can be measured or by enquiry
Frequency and voltage are nominal

Wow, I'm actually starting to think I did really good in this paper! There were a few questions that were deliberately designed to catch you out, i.e: -

Insulation resistance tests, what test voltage would you use for these circuits operating voltages: -

550V AC
250V AC
25V AC

I nearly put down 250V for the last one, then I remembered that that was only for testing SELV or PELV so I bounced back to 500V DC!

In part 2 there was 30 marks allocated just for describing how to do the following tests: -

1.) Continuity of protective conductor on a radial lighting circuit.
2.) A Ze test.

A further 15 marks for drawing the earth fault loop path for a TN-C-S system. I figured that was an easy 45 marks to be honest.

In the book I have "Exam success Inspection and Testing 2391-10" it states on page 40 25V test at 250V... Seems another ambiguous question. Anyway, good luck everyone. When do results come out?

Swifters can't you remember that question from the March 10 exam? It was the same question and City & Guilds gave the answer in the Cheif Examiners Report. It is frequency and voltage.

Hi Des 56 if u look eic on the supply characteristics under nature of supply parameters,on the notes
if u can read it says 1 by enquiry 2 by enquiry or by measurement.

Very good spot indeed! And the magical word...OR! Is anyone else out there as annoyed as I am?

One question I wasn't sure on were the initial verification.... 3 conditions that must be verified. I know you need to confirm no visible damage, complies to bs7671 and not deviate from designers original intention but I think question 4 was for those answers and guessed they wouldn't want you to repeat the same 3 again? What the hell did they mean by 3 conditions? Were they expecting you to say no persons in danger while doing it, no possibility of damaging equipment e.t.c.

thanks guys

Hi Lee, there is nothing stopping you. Anyone can sit it. If I were you I would get a copy of something like:

Practical Guide to Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations: Conforms to 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2008) and Part P of Building Regulations

Either Amazon or Ebay and make sure you can understand it. I have not done any course as they are expensive, Guilford College let you sit just the exam and practical about ÂŁ60 each and you need to pass both the theory first, then the practical. I would sit the 2391 while you can as they are going to discontinue it and split it into three sections which will probably make it more expensive but may make it easier to pass...

The help on here is always good too.
