Just wondered if any other guys are currently doing the 2391-20 project Downtown Fire Station?

Issues lay with
The duel fed lights I'm thinking of a 4 pole contactor??? located within the control room any thoughts
My installation is going to be mainly Galvanised Trunking and Conduit chased into the blockwork walls.
Any thoughts on the 12v SELV Socket outlets not something im familiar with???

TALK TO ME

hi fellas. Ive started to look at the project. All ive done so far is get the drawings photocopied, and mark 1 up with room dimensions to aid me late.

Ive started to try and find twin 58w 1800 fittings, but 1800 fittings are 2x 70w. Also what do they mean by dual supply. i was thinking, just running a second switchlive through a contactor in the control room, and taking the switch for the contactor coil from one of the switchlives, that is going to be run through the contactor.

has emergency lighting got to be included in the installation?
do we have to allow for heating/ventilation in max demand calcs, and in DB schedule?
same as above but with security, fire ect?

Alomost finished my project now :)
I used 1500mm lights, I think everyone else on my course did too.
125w SON-T lights don't seem to exist either....
Do you mean using a contactor in parallel with the lightswitch? As that would switch all the lights on, when only certain ones are required.
I spent a lot of time designing my own forms and charts for the project, when I should have just been getting on with it! I also answered the questions in my own order, when I would have been better doing them in the order they say. I've used self-contained emergency lighting. I will allow a spare way in the CCU for the heating, but I'm not specifying an MCB or circuit. Nor am I doing anything to do with the showers.
I think it says security/fire will be installed by a separate company?

ÂŁ500 4 days, then 4 separate days spread out over a couple of months.

i paid just over ÂŁ1100, plus time off work!

Ouch! Failure is NOT an option.

Any chance you could email me the spec & drawings, I'm doing sod all at the moment, give me something to play with.

To All, Have you taken the exam yet? Good luck anyway, it winds up the 2391 sitters when you sit at your desk with all the reg books!

good point regarding the contactor.
regarding the lights, it doesnt say that we need to choose a fitting, it just tells us what they are, so im going to work to that.
I think that with the dual supplied lights, i might investigate the use of a sustained type system.

How did you manage to work out max demand if you didnt allow for the heating, or showers?

Because it's not specified. I'm assuming showers are fed from a boiler (not electric) and a gas boiler will only require a FCU at an unknown location.
You might find when you start working out cable sizes that you need to chose a light to use manufactures data :)

Hi all,
Course cost ÂŁ450 i think. have done the exam was ok to be honest. just the project is a pain. Think doing it on your own is a bad thing you may be need two people bounce ideas of each other i get to involved then dont do wot i was meant to. Contactor for the lighting is good need to watch back feeds though. Just working through cable calcs for sizes and all that rings are a pain all round. got to do r1 + r2 on the circuits as well.

It should mention these in the design brief on the front or second page of the project spec.

If not you will need to make reference to them in your 'assumptions' which I put at the front of the folder I submitted my project in.

I used a nice big A4 ring binder with those slot in dividers to separate each section.

I was under the impression it was meant to be your own work?
If you are having problems then you should talk to your tutor.
A good start is to work out design current and where circuits are going.

Hi, I struggled with the project but that was because it was very hard. If you do not know where to start you should be talking to your tutor. The dual lights can be found on the net or talk to a rep from a manufacturer. The whole job has got to be designed from scratch so all design currents volt drops cable sizes have got to be done. Work your way through it and ask for pointers. Brian scaddon has a book on the course gives questions and answers to calcs you can use this to work out sizes. As people have said it has got to be your own work you cant ask for other peoples took me a lot of hard work to get through it.

To whoever it was, don't try copying work around the college computers, by email. They might have software that detects that kind of activity. It happened at Edinburgh University a couple of years ago, a load of students got failed!
