i am 17th edition electrician 9 years in trade wide range of experience but not so much in the testing area so not sure what im letting myself in for regarding this course.

thanks guys

Basically the practical consists of two exams. One is on a domestic installation. They put faults on the board and you fill in an electrical installation condition report. The other exam you have three test boards, one you test the zs on four circuits and using the rule of thumb you say if it is a pass or fail for each circuit. Two insulation resistance test on four circuits and record the reading and again say if its a pass or fail. Three continuity test

If the tiler passed it then he was a clever tiler that held the right information in his head to do a 'proper' exam and pass.

You could also do it over 10 weeks at night school, it also works out cheaper.

2391, 2394, 2395. Whatever you do are doing or going to do, then the course will tell you all you need to know from a practical aspect. Some of the theory is covered, and some is not. The very important stuff like high and low values of Ze are done in great depth, but things like knowing the voltage, current and time characteristics of an Insulation Resistance Tester is just skimmed over, you will have to go and study GN3 in great depth for any of the testing written courses, and the biggest of the biggest causes of failure, is incorrect use of terminology. Unfortunately the C&G marker, will mark what you write, and not what he knows you meant. A classic example, Electricity at Work Act, which should read Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. Notice i have not used abbreviations, and i have included the date. Insulation resistance test instrument, not a Megger. And on it goes.

Cheers...........Howard

if you feel you're lacking in any department, don't go for the 1 week course, go for the 3 month one. there's a boat load to learn and 5 days isn't a very long time if you're not 100% sure about your abilities.

What will the main difference be in terms of the new courses?
I sat & passed the 2391 last year, was hard work, a studied a lot but learned more about testing.

I am looking into doing the design course which I think would be the new 2396 course.!!

Don't understand why there isn't a clear study path or qualifications for a electrician to go on.

Especially here in Scotland were u have select and the sjib
