I

iceman

hello can someone tell me if this will get me through this question to decribe how to undertake an insulation restence test on a new installation

or is this over kill lol

describe how to undertake an insulation resistence test on a new installation
inform people in the area
seek permission to isolate the supply
lock off the supply
prove the installation is dead useing an approved voltage indicator
confirming the approved voltage indicator is working correctly with the use of an proving unit
then test the approved voltage indicator again with the proving unit after confirming the installation is dead
warning notices are present
remove all voltage sensitive equipment
like lamps dimmers neon lamps control timers delay timers luminairs
select an insulation resistence tester check calabration of insulation resistence tester
check for signs of damage confirm with GS 38 document
check leads and probes for signs of damage
leads should be insulated with no damage to leads
leads should be correctly coloured
probes should be fused 500A
probes tips should be shrouded
probe tips should be atleast 4mm diametre preffably 2mm
set insulation resistence tester to 500v dc
with circuits breakers and switches open
test between line conductors and neutrel conductors connected together to earth at the appropriate distrbution board or for circuits not vunrable to insulation resistence testing line and neutrel seperately to earth
for circuits containing 2way switching and intermedate switching the switches must be opperated one at a time and circuits subjected to addtional insulation resistence tests
an insulation resistence value of not less than 1.0Mohm complies
with the regulations where an insulation resistence of less than 2Mohm
is recorded the possibility of a latent defect exists in these cirumstances each circuit should be tested seperatly

its at a trainin centre in brum on broad street i think its total electrical traning i did my 17th edition there last year i got offered a job but turned it down wish id of took it up now the way things are this year lol

i got my 2391 exam in august and have a issue with this question, because the question is asking for a ir test on a NEW installation the installation in theory should not be live untill its been tested so will the examiner be looking for this fact in the answer if it was a ir test on a EXISTING circuit there would be a need to seek permission to isolate and safe isolation procedure any thoughts

when answering question in the 2391 you must always mention the safe isolation procedure whether its dead or live my tutors stressed this wile doin the 2391 course beware dont get court out

See your point, but the Iceman is quite right.

You could always modify your wording so it doesn`t sound so daft ("ask permission to isolate" an already isolated install is a bit silly) You could put "ensure supply IS isolated by carrying out safe isolation procedure" or similiar, but it`s the content & not the grammar you`ll bve judged on, so long as it`s readable & includes ALL the salient points, i wouldn`t worry yourself over it.

Bore them, humour them, take the miss - if you can get down on paper all the points & in the correct order included in GN3, you win!

i with u all the way but i got this issue from p18 of exam success structuring long answers section b where the example question is descrbe the procedure for carrying out a ir on a newly installed lighting circuit, under that he goes on to say the question tells u the circuit is a new lighting circuit and from this you can determine that the ir test should be carried out before the circuit is to be energised for the first time, therefore your answer will not need to include a description of the consultation process or the isolation procedure. Now is that a tip to save us time or a point in the description hes looking for

that sounds good to me electricAL covered all angles with that thanx

I would agree that for new installation, the installation should be dead until all initial verification tests are complete test result verified and that it has been provided that the installation complies with BS 7671 and is safe for intended use, but in the real world the installation may have been made live before testing.

Worse case scenerio I was once as to go and test and new installation that had been made live 6 months prior, only to find the the REC earth had not been connected.

Other trades may need lights, or power, I know it may not be safe or comply with electricity at work regulation, so as a result, I alway preform safe isolation procedure before starting any dead testing better safe then sorry.
