nice one mate,
so how did you get on woth identifying the 12 faults ,was they easy to find and what sort of things did you have to look for. only asking as i got mine in two weeks. what was the fourth assessment like the full pir and can you give us a idea what its like cheers

Hi BruceLee,

I recommend when you look at the fault board treat it as you would a house.
Start with bonding, meter tails, consumer unit then check each circuit.

You will at the end of that test when you have found all faults be asked to put a number next to each fault when you compare faults with the assessor, I believe this is to see if you inspected it an order like you probably would in a property. It is so easy to spot an obvious fault and get distracted. Just think of doing in an orderly fashion as if you were to enter and start a property.

I am sure all will be okay, remember to give everything a little tug.

The faults were not to bad to spot some were pretty obvious and others you just had to look abit closer for. The full pir was ok just take your time and try not to rush its easy to make mistakes when you start rushing.

cheers mate just getting a little bit nervous as you dont know what to expect
but like you say will just have to take my time, my written exam june 10th and the practical june 15th.
Have you completed practical but not the written, and can you give me a bit of advice on what to include for the written when explaining test procedures. I have been writing them all out over and over the ones i am struggling on what to include the most is continuity of ring final circuit conductors and insulation resistance, if i write a few out will you check them out for me see if i missing anything or including to much.
Also how do you know when to include using a approved voltage indicator to prove dead

I have only done my practical not done my written yet so I am in the same boat as you ( June 10th) I think you would have had a bit of a advantage doing your practical before your written though. You could try using diagrams instead of writing circuit tests out if it is easier for you, have you got exam succes 2391 book quite a few examples in there.

yeah mate got exam success only gives a few examples, and not much info on safe isolation do you only have to include it if the circuit is a existing one. when its a new circuit eg initial verification say a IR test on a new lighting circuit you wouldnt need to include would you but if it was a pir on a existing i reckon you would then eh

For example, if the question said something on the lines of, explain in detail the test procedure of continuity of circuit 3 (that could be ring final circuit in the explanation at the start of the long questions).

It will be based on an installation that is live.

So start with something like:

I would carry out the safe isolation procedure including locking off and labelling that circuit with my GS38 approved voltage indicator, then it would be safe for me to remove the Line, neutral and CPC conductors...............

Then go through the test procedure, they want to make sure you take safe isolation into consideration.

It seems lengthy but that is based on a question that may say explain in detail.

cheers mark,
thats what i have been trying to find out eg if its a existing then I will include it say for a existing radial lighting circuit
seek permission to isolate supply
safely isolate supply, lock off ,circuit breakers off ,lamps removed, switches closed
use a approved gs38 voltage indicator to prove dead
check working on a known supply
check N-L, E-L, E-N & L-L at db for 3 phase
check instrument again to prove was working
select a low resistane ohmeter
confirm calibrated, condition, leads to gs38, set to low ohms scale
note resistance of leads or null
link Line and Cpc at DB with flying lead
test between L-cpc at all points on circuit and operate switches
record the highest reading at the furthest point as the (R1+R2)value for the circuit,
subtracting the resistance of leads if necessarry on the schedule of test results
remove test link,replace lamps
reinstate supply,turn CBs on

do you reckon thats to long winded
