Hello It's my first Post but I've have been reading and comming to the forum for knowledge for a while now.

I've found that someone has asked almost every question I thought of but either they have not, or I cannot find the thread...

Question is "When did City and Guilds first introduce 2391-10, and what preceeded it?"

Thanks in advance for any replies

regards Joe.

Biff wont be far off, but until the advent of the 16th edition, there was no real requirement to test as such. There was Inspection and Testing, but only in a basic form. Once the 16th came in, I&T became a requirement, but as with all things IEE and C&G the 2391 will have come much later than the introduction of the 16th edition because they take a while to get their acts together. A good example of these organisations working together, i am still using training resources from the 17th edition to teach the 17th amendment 1 course, i make do and mend, and no on has failed yet.

Cheers.........Howard

i was allowed to "test" before the 2391 came out!
being a time served apprentice with gold card
I guess i will have to get around to sitting it!!

i remember sitting my 15B and the world went crazy, having to earth aluminium windows in bathrooms, even though they were sitting in wooden surround.

Thanks all for the infomation and insight, its interesting to know how the regulations and I & T qualifications built around them arrived to where they are now.

BS 7671 covers a mere fraction of electrical inspection and testing!! It basically only covers small industrial/commercial installations and of course domestic installations, which it is primarily geared towards!!

Thank you Archy Styrigg

The first edition of the Regs was a fantastic read... from 1882 but the language in the 17th edition seems to be unchanged. I like that although I struggled with what I used to think was convoluted language when I first started trying to get to grips with the 17th edition (I'm new to this).

Its great to see the history to the Regs, and I feel very privileged to know that every time I refer back to BS7671 there is over a hundred years of continued learning and condensed experience in those pages.

17. NB "The value of frequently testing the wires..." they were even stressing it then:) a Paragraph for Inspection and Testing!

Hello Engineer54

Your reply made me jump a couple of pages of 'Protection of Industrial Power Systems... by T Davies' which I found in my local library! would these other test not in BS7671 be CT Polarity Check, CT Magnetising curves, Relay Characteristic Check, Insulation tests, tripping Circuit Check?

Could you post a list of all testing carried out by commissioning / maintenance engineers for non domestic/light commercial installations.

I do not know what they are yet but am keen to find out! I would appreciate it if anyone was able to offer up any reading suggestions for further investigation, so I can get a better understanding of all things electrical.

Regards Joe:D

Honestly talking, there are just too many to start making lists out. There are even small variations of testing methods, that would also then come under a different name.

A couple of simple ones are MV/HV Hi-Pot testing, Transformer oil testing, secondary injection testing, Primary injection testing, Transformer turn ratio testing, ..... Jesus the list will just go on an on, pages of them...lol!!

Just had a thought, have a look at our sponsors ''Test Meter'' web site and look for electrical testers that you have never heard of, and look at their applications and PDFs. At the very least, it will give you some idea how and what they can be used to test!! Happy Reading... lol!!
