Well the final 2391 written exam is coming up this Thursday and I've been revising like mad every night ,read the guidance note 3 five times and still learning and been going through question papers so wish me luck people this time I will pass.

Keep an eye out for things like bsen rcds having a 300ms disconnection time, and various other bits which are slightly different as you can be tripped up.

Also, make sure you get the earth fault loop diagrams right! I rechecked mine right at the end of my exam and realised I'd done it wrong, luckily had enough time to correct it.

Thanks Englishman,I've tried to memorise the rcd table for tt systems. Think it 30mA max 1667ohms
100mA =500ohms
300mA=167ohms
500mA=100ohms
Does that sound rite to you

Have no fear mate. I teach the course, and have read GN3 a lot more than 5 times, and look at past papers constantly, and i am still learning.

My tips,

Take your time and read the question properly.

Use the correct terminology, no abbreviations whatsoever.

If the question has 3 marks available, they want 3 things to be mentioned, 10 marks, then 10 things and so on.

When you draw the earth loop path for a given system, do the right one, dont do TNS if they want TNCS etc. There is usually 15 marks for this, 8 for correctly labelling the diagram, and 7 for getting the diagram correct or vice versa.

If you have to "show all calculations" then show them, this usually gets thrown in for resistances in parallel, so include the steps that have the letters in like Rt =, etc.

On the scenario part, read very carefully, and make sure you know what documentation you will need to provide to the client on completion of the works. More often that not you will be given a scenario that requires an Electrical Installation certificate, schedule of test results, and a schedule of inspections for a new installation only for the new or refurbished work, and an electrical installation condition report and schedule of test results for the existing installation that has been inspected and tested for insurance purposes or similar. On that note ALWAYS mention Inspection before Testing in anything that you write.

In most cases it is incorrect terminology or not answering the question properly when you knew the answer that gets the fails. Steer clear of those, and you will be fine. C&G examiners are ruthless, and will mark you on what you write, not what they think or know you mean, so be precise and to the point.

Good luck,

Cheers..............Howard

Sirkit didnt miss anything in his advice to you. Terminology is vital but not hard to remember after plenty of relaxed reading. Remember NOT to build it up to a mountain,a man wrote it,a man will mark it. All the best and think yourself lucky to have a shot at an extinct beast! Good trip dude.

read it every second you can get some sample questions or the exam success book

read GS38 and Memerandum of guidance on elecy at work regs
part 6 and 7 of the regs
and OSg for good measure
I also had various other books such as
christopher kitchers guide to I&T
scaddons guide to I&T
and a few NICEIC books which covered some things the others didnt but verything in them was NIC orientated and there veiw
practice the earth fault loop diagrams and fully labelling
write out test procedures using bullet points with and without diagrams
and test Procedure for continuity of ring final circuit conductors inc calculations for each step
calucaltions for Overall IR Ie 1/Rt
calcualtions for resistances of differnt size cables for differnt lenghts eg 10mm singles for main protective bonding
how to find resistance or lenght or CSA
learn all names for all test instruments
safe iso procedure
ohms law
etc etc
basically learn everything you think may come up and them learn some more of what may not it all helps as on the day anything can come up so the more prepared you are the better
I started to revise 2-3 months before course very day and then took the course over 8 weeks and the written and few weeks later I flew it because of all the study i had enough time to read through a few times to check my answers
and felt fairl confident i had done enough then the doubt sets in during the long wait
I waited 13 weeks to find out if i had passed written then 5 months in total before getting my cert as the coleg had forgot send the practical assessments off jsut my luck lol

best feeling in the world when that brown envelope comes and says pass

if only we knew how well we had done or not would be better

good luck mate

What i found when i done it was to sift out all the irrelevant information in the written questions.
For example if they give you a scenario like a former butchers shop that employed 4 people with a flat above that was sometimes used by the butchers family and sometimes rented privately wants a supply fitted to a shed 20 meters away in the yard.......etc, look at what they are asking you.The fact that it was a butchers shop previously or the above flat was rented out privately is completely irrelevant.All you are concerned with is the electrical installation taking place.I found every single question was written in a not straightforward way

Best of luck i passed it on my 2nd attempt and it was a great feeling

Good luck mate
As said in previous post don't panic and read carefully
Exam success is a really useful book to have plenty of examples and questions are repeated in various exams so you may find that one you have seen in book is in you're exam
