2392 is it worth doing?

Hello

I'm nearing the completion of my apprenticeship, allthough i am currently out of work, so also looking for a contractor to take me on so i can complete it in the Norfolk area. My college tutor has sugested i do the 2392 testing course before i do the 2391. Is the 2392 worth doing or is it just a money making scheme from the colleges?

In all honesty if your out of work you might get funding and then why not do it, all training is good training.

If your going to have to pay yourself I would honestly try for the 2391-10, you have the time to study, and if you can get your hands on a 17th meter you can practice practice and practice some more on yours, friends and families houses.

Both are marketed as testing and inspection courses

A lot of centres are going for the 2392 because more people appear to be passing it and it is now see as the introduction to the 2391 - more passes more people more money for the centre

2391 is the one you want at the end of the day.

You say you are nearing the completion of your apprenticeship so do you have your 2382 (17th Edition)? If not this one will help you more as employer seek electricians to have. Then do your T&I

I passed the 2382 last year, i had to do the update because i did the 2330 level 3 to 16th edition. It seems to me that those who are doing the 2330 level 3 to 17th should also do the 2382. Which i find a bit odd.

And if you go down the 2391 route, start now, even if you dont plan to do it for a year or two. buy The IET Guidance note 3 and start reading it, get conversant with all the terminology used it is vital for the written exam. Read and try get some practical testing experience, and learn the test procedures so you know them off by heart. when I say terminology i mean exact phrases such as Minor Electriclal Works Installation Certificate, Not MWC. Electricity at work regulations NOT act, Low resistance ohmmeter, Insulation resistance tester NOT megger, get familiar with the operating ranges and requirements of the test instruments.

if you start all this now, then you will have a massive head start for 2391.

Cheers.......Howard

I'm doing 2391 at the moment (hadn't even heard of the 2392 until recently) I am a bit concerned about the three phase as I don't deal with three phase on a day to day basis.
I wonder just how hard the three phase testing will be.
Anyone have an opinion?
Cheers.

I've just completed the 2392-10.
I've done it as a stepping stone tp the 2391 and the pass rate is higher if you do it this way.
Just gotta memorise 2391-10 and do as much testing on a 3 phase system.
Practical seems pretty straight forward. 2 hours to inspect and test a 3 phase system with 7 circuits on the board.
Its the written part Im dreading!!!!

Hi im sitting my 2392 in april but have been thinking shall i just push myself to get the 2391 but have heard there is only a 30% pass rate for the 2391.

I just passed the 2392 on Tuesday and im now over half way into the 2391 and the 2392 is a great stepping stone onto the 2391 course. But as others have said get GN3 and keep reading it till you know it like the back of your hand

City and Guilds developed this course because of the high casualty rate for 2391. Properly delivered it will prepare you for the 2391 assessment. Hard study will prepare you for the exam. I cannot reccomend Scaddans book on Inspection and testing highly enough
