2392 is it worth doing?

Hello

I'm nearing the completion of my apprenticeship, allthough i am currently out of work, so also looking for a contractor to take me on so i can complete it in the Norfolk area. My college tutor has sugested i do the 2392 testing course before i do the 2391. Is the 2392 worth doing or is it just a money making scheme from the colleges?

Iv done about 3 days testing in my life and i passed 2391.
Read Gn3 take in what its saying and do it as the book says, Its as simple as that.
I probably passed because i have nt picked any bad habits up yet from doing testing alot.
Learn how to use the meter and understand what its doing. Just flicking it to a setting and writing it down wont help.
Finding ratings for MCB's and alike in the regs is key. Rule of thumb (MCB value x 0.8) and other factors.
Testing 3 phase.Test 1 phase on PSCCx2 if you have nt got a meter that will read it.
Read GN3 and soak the information up. You could read it for 6 months solid, Unless it sinks in, ya stuffed :S
Practical was nt to bad 4 tasks 1. Visual on Ccu(missing CPC's,No grommets,Bonding wrong size etc etc) 2. Insulation Res on CCU at tails(Does it pass,Find circuit that is causing low reading)
3. Zs reading on a rig (Zs outside tabulated value in regs) 4. 3 phase board supplying ccu (Do a PIR on it)

if you prepare yourself for the 2391 written examination then it won't be a problem.

its all about being focused.

understand what your doing.

doing it practically is a different issue.

i wish you luck.

I'm doing 2391 at the moment (hadn't even heard of the 2392 until recently) I am a bit concerned about the three phase as I don't deal with three phase on a day to day basis.
I wonder just how hard the three phase testing will be.
Anyone have an opinion?
Cheers.

You have nothing to fear about 3 phase on the 2391. The test procedure is exactly the same as for single phase, but you have 2 more line conductors than with single, so there is a bit more testing involved, and with the exception of phase to phase all the rest is as single phase, just repeated 3 times. You will be shown what to do and how to test, so dont let lack of experience on 3 phase put you off.

As my earlier post states, and a few others have said, the 2391 only has a high failure rate because of the depth of knowledge you need. And if you dont start to learn GN3 well in advance you may only end up with a few days to try and memorise the book. The course is 4 days, you will learn a lot, and also forget a lot as it is intensive, so the more revision time you have the better. The mistake almost everyone who takes this exam is that they only start to look at GN3 when the course starts just like i did, luckily i had 4 weeks after the practical to study for the written, and it was just enough as i passed. in 4 weeks i probably spent about 100+ hours reading GN3.

Cheers.............Howard

Just actually got my 2392 certificate through the post today.....it was a great little course, run on a Friday, sat and Sunday the exam
Was on the Wednesday so all crammed in together which kept everything fresh in the memory

On the Thursday I was not to bright on testing come the Sunday I could test a domestic property and actualy understand the results.....I think if I went into industry to test with this qualification I would just be making a U-turn out of the door.....

So from a domestic point of view it's a great course and good stepping stone but defo worth doing the 2391 and 2400 if you are going further than a house bash.

you get 90 mins for the practical assesment 4 for the 2391-10 not 2 hrs
assesment 1 20 mins
assesment 2 30mins
assesment 3 10 mins
altogether
you have 2 hrs 30 mins to do them all

the written is harder and 2 hrs 30 mins if my memory serves me correct lol

and I would just go for the 2391-10 as its more recognised and the 2392 was only introduced because of the failure rate of 2391-10
also its only for initial verification not existing installations so pointless really

If your paying yourself just do the 2391-10 lv3 its possible to pass if you put the effort in
as others have said learn GN3 backwards , section 7 regs and learn all test procedures and how to explain them i bullet points with and without diagrams
and with or without calcs for continuity of ring final circuit conductors for each of the 3 steps
learn how to draw all supply systems TT, TN-C-S, TN-S, IT and label with correct terminology showing fault paths for Ief and pscc
good luck whichever you chose

I studied for 4 months including the 8 week evening course for upto 12hrs a day or more so all i learned came up in the lessons so was easier by doing this

As it happens, I'm doing 2392 myself at the local College, 2nd day today.
Last week I was very disheartened - I didnt learn a thing all day, we got a 15 question sample test, and I did it in less then 10 minutes,(and got all right) it was so straightforward.
I do have a lot of experience though, so your situation may be different. If you have been doing domestic electric for a while, and doing the testing properly, then 2392 will be a doddle.
We did a few 2391 questions today, and they were far harder - mainly as it wasnt multi-choice. One was 'give 3 reasons why polarity should be checked before energising a circuit'. I put all sockets will be live, any ES lampholders will be live, and fuses/RCDs may not trip. The answer was SP lines will only disconnect the neutral, ES bulbs will be live at the screw, and all sockets and accesories will be permanently live.
Almost right, but not quite, so probably wouldnt get any marks for that on 2391, but if multi-choice on 2392, then not a problem.
Overall, for purely dometsic work (which is all I do), then probably worth doing.
If you want to do 3 phase, then 2391 is a must.

Alan.
