2394-2395 Course EAL Level 3

I'm about to do the 2394 C&G but the place is asking if i want to do the EAL level 3 instead, Is it the same and is it sort after by company's looking to employ ?

I have also been told that the 2394 is for new buildings only ?? Do i have to have both 2394-2395 (it used to be 2391 or this is what I'm being told)
i only ask as the job i have been offered was to have 2391. So will EAl level 3 be just as good. I haven't asked the company yet as i really don't want to mess up my chance at this job as its working at full pay with Sparky's and massive training etc.

EAL Level 3 Certificate in Installing, Testing and Ensuring Compliance of Electrical Installations in Dwellings (QCF) Is the EAL course.

I have my 17th wiring and reg and with my inspection and testing eal level 3 or C&G(There is a 2 mth wait on doing the test with C&G 2394-2395. I have to passed and ready before the time it would take to be passed with C&G) plus working with sparky's of 15 years plus. Do i need anything else so i can test and inspect and carry out my own and others work in a domestic property.


For someone of my age changing careers is really hard so this is the only way in. If you could help me out by linking anything or saying anything, I would be very grateful Thanks for reading Matt

How is the qualification assessed?
The assessment involves one on-screen open book exam (IET GN3) and practical assessments covering
initial inspection, earth fault loop impedance testing, insulation resistance testing, and commissioning of a
three phase rig.

C&G

This qualification demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you need, including, designing and installing systems, appropriate legislation, testing installations, issuing safety certificates. Assessment will be through a multiple-choice test, a written assignment and a practical task.

EAL 0pen book exams C&G closed book exams = EAL for Electrical Trainee C&G for proper sparks. I don't employ anyone but if I did I would be looking for C&G.

I tend to agree with the consideration of EAL versus C&G, but they are getting closer.

The 2391 covered initial inspection and testing of newly installed work and also periodic inspection and testing of existing work.
This has now been split out into 2394 which is for initial inspection and testing of new installations and 2395 which covers the inspection and testing of existing installations.
There are some overlaps on the two courses.

In order to competently install electrical equipment you should know the requirements for initial inspection and testing as given through the 2394, even if you are working with someone who is doing this part, because then you know where you are heading.
Completing periodic inspections to assess and existing installation and provide an electrical installation condition report requires an additional level of skill and experience and would also benefit from the 2395 training.

The EAL course that you have been offered is a much longer course with an entirely different intent and the college should have made this clear.
Effectively you want to, for example, do a GCSE in maths and they have said would you like to do an ONC in geometry!
The course you mention is to meet the entry requirements that are applied to the enrolment as a qualified supervisor under Part P, not totally relevant at the moment for you (and not really a direction to go in).
If I see a qualification saying "for dwellings" I would expect it to be pointless, as it would be very limited.
EAL do offer the 2394 and 3495 equivalents and these would be more appropriate to compare with what you intend to do.

I would tend to look for somewhere that can do the C&G qualifications sooner; to be equivalent to the 2391 you would need both, but the initial inspection would be the most relevant and job requirements stating 2391 are usually to weed out some less experienced people and reduce the number of applicants, not for the relevance of the qualification to the work you are doing.

Thank you all very much for your help I will be doing C&G now. I thought it was going to be something like what everyone is saying above. Fingers crossed job offer still stands.

I'm ment to start the job in September back end of it and i have been told i can not start my test for 2394 till Oct 7th.

Job will have to wait i really went to start off my new career with the right Qualifications i have been a plasterer for the last 10 years, but had a nice crash and my arm will last 4-5 walls and I'm done in for 3 days.

I have mates in the trade doing just testing, domestic work etc and there getting a nice wage plus easy hours etc

So with the 17th wiring already done 2394-2395 Is next. I feel after reading and reading this forum I'm going to be fine with getting my career Started off in the right way.

Anything else i can do, to becoming better Qualified ? Like more C&G etc I have asked around but everyone says different. All i want is to start off in domestic with my own Qualifications and work along side a skilled Sparky etc I have the Sparky but i have done his head in with question's lol So he told me to come on here.

everywhere the same, last 2391 was sat in april but had to be registered before sept 2012 i think.

EAL is not that new, look at EMTA. It appears that both the JIB and NICEIC endorse these qualifications.

Although, I found that the questions are more diverse and at times not the answers you'd expect to see.

would that be the new 'logic certification' inspection and testing qualifications that have just been recognised by the jib?

i have to say, city and guilds should be untouchable when it comes to work based qual's, but the way they've been devalued and dumbed down over the last few years means these other providers are snapping at their heels.
