Hi Guys,

I was asked today if it would be possible to be on 24 Hr standby by a small commercial business. I am quite happy to do this, however as it would be a first for me I was hoping someone could educate me onto how much is appropriate to charge for sitting around monthly waiting for the phone to ring?

Anyone done this before and got an idea of were a fair standby rate should be?

Thanks

Carl

If you can get me out of bed you can have me for free!

Seriously now: either you charge them for being on standby but then you'll never know if and when they'll call you, or you give a flat rate for night call outs and a flat rate for day call outs. That way you'll only be called on when definitely needed at 3 am in the morning! I'd choose the latter option and would look to having around double rate for a night call out.

i,d also go for the latter but state a minimum rate, ie, if you get called at 3am, the minimum charge is 4hrs at ÂŁx per hour then after 4 hours ÂŁx per hour, this will cover your travelling etc plus the fact you just have to reset a mcb or something daft.

It all depends on wether you are on standby on a 'casual' basis, in which case i would go for the latter. BUT, if the standby is on an 'essential' basis, then i would want a retaining fee regardless of wether i was called out or not (this would compensate me for not being able to have a social drink, meal out, night out etc, incase i was needed) in addition to being paid 4hrs for each call out. Otherwise you could be home for days on end waiting for nothing?

i know sparks who get paid ÂŁ7 a week standby, thats not at typo either, they then get paid when they go out at time/half double etc,but the thing with standby is just that, your standing by cant go out cant have a drink just incase the phone goes, the security game pays around ÂŁ70 per night plus hours worked at time/half double, and if your looking at doing a month on standby thats a lot of time to give up,only you know what your worth for that,id get ÂŁ2200 a month for being on standby plus the time im out.

Hi Carl,

What other work are you doing for this company?

How many days a week?

How will agreeing to the affect your normal business day?

So long as the Pro's outweigh the Con's then it'll be worth it. Just make sure it's YOU getting the better deal :D
