Hi

I have 2amp round pin sockets in my house for lighting. I am looking for a table lamp with a 2amp round pin plug but can only see the normal 13amp plugs attached to lamps in shops. I was wondering if retailers are not allowed to sell lamps with this type of plug - whether it falls out of current standards/regulations?

Any assistance would be appreciated
Many thanks

I have to be honest and say that the moulded plug was an advent brought in about 20yrs ago, and in all this time I don't think that I have seen a table lamp come with a 2/5amp plug.

It as always been in my case, a situation of cutting the 13amp plug top off and fitting a 2/5amp one if required.

As for not selling lamps with 2/5amp plugs I think it is more of rarity of the socket and it's use rather than a regulation

Brown right, blue left, green/yellow top

Alternately get your lamps together and phone an electrician (tell them how many plugs to pick up)

Oh fun! I have a table lamp that I wanted to add an in-line dimmer switch to - perhaps I could do both at the same time. I don't really know anything about electrics so will get an electrician to do it. Might be a stupid question but before I buy the parts I was wondering would a dimmer such as this work when fitted to a cable that is to be used with a 2amp round pin plug. I wasn't sure about the voltage, amps etc. Apologies if it is a ridiculous question.

It won't let me post a link for the in-line dimmer but it the standard one that comes up in search engines in-line bridge dimmer (60-160W, 220-240V).
Suitable for use with 2 or 3 core flex

Those 2amp sockets tend to work off light switches, aka you flip the switch and all the lamps connected to the 2amp sockets come on. You can then install a regular dimmer switch in place of the light switch

Good luck with that one .... I asked this mob where can I get an 8 Amp fuse to fit a 13 Amp plug top & all they did was take the pi$$ :(

I have always liked the idea of having table lamps and the like on 2A plugs and sockets, Free's up the general power 13A outlets. And dead handy having them switched from the lighting switch position. lol!!

Can't see the problem with just cutting the 13A supplied plug top and replacing with a 2A plug top. About 3 to 5 minutes, and in most cases, a spare 13A plug top into the bargain...lol!!

Last batch of 2A's I bought for a customer were only about a quid each, no big deal. Used extensively in hotels, from experience.

Retailers probably wont stock these plugs, due to a lack of demand, but all Electrical wholesalers will either have them in stock, or be able to get them for you. The only regs that apply are the plug and socket regulations, and no i am not trying to have you over, it does exist. So the plugs you buy will meet these regs, if they didnt they wouldnt be on sale in this country. These things are still very common in pubs and such like, my local has loads of them.

Cheers..........Howard

Sorry I dont understand this

Without seeing the 2 pin plug , there is a chance it's not polarised .

Sorry seen - plug is 3 pin polarised

(and hopefully sockets are shuttered )
( re visiting 2 pin round days ..ooops )

Sorry --- living in the past --- brains going as well !

i prefer the 5a type, slightly bigger, easier to use and easier to terminate into.

and suits the 6A MCB sizing better

Hate to be the one receiving that electric bill for all those 1kw lamps you must be using

you'd be surprised to see what i have seen wired into 5A sockets lol

ie a 2amp to 4gang 13 extension lead to "convert" the "funny shaped plug" so they can use it ! lol
