Hello, I’ve recently purchased a house, I noticed none of my plug sockets in one of my rooms are working including a switch for the outside garden light. After some investigating I found one of the sockets to have had the live wire blanked off . Am I right in assuming that this would break the circuit to the rest of the sockets and the light switch as the disconnected socket is the one closest to the fuse box?. Is it worth reconnecting this wire ?as I’m worried it’s maybe been removed for a safety reason . Any help is appreciated , thanks

It may have been disconnected for a reason.
I would not recommend reconnecting that socket until it Is confirmed the earth is connected.

It also is not the reason that the other sockets in the course are not working.

If recently purchased, you might have some recourse with the vendor, If none are working.

Also, the light switch should be on a different circuit to the sockets….. but not always. The lights may be fed from a fused spur off the socket circuit.

Can you show us the fuse board? Has it still got fuses, or breaker switches?
There might be something we can suggest from there.

It is likely that red cable has been damaged.it will prob be the same at the other end .certainly don't connect .why they have left the neutral connected is baffling. It should at least have a label on it saying damaged do not connect and a notice at the consumer unit.i would pay to get a eicr done after Xmas. Or if your very very lucky before.earth wires without green sleeving smaks of DIY wiring.ive just completed a rewire on Friday where the customer had bought a house with crumbling rubber cables including sockets .the home report never picked it up because they just look at consumer unit and check its modern ,what ever that means .
