Im 30 years old and i've completed the first year of the level 2 electrical installation night course at college and im currently working for a one band sparky 5 days a week have been for about 2 moths now.

I now want to go and do the 3 year apprenticeship in september, but i know my age is against me.

Im just wondering does anyone know:

1: can my boss still get funding for me?
2: how much will it cost if he cant?
3: can i get student loans to pay for any college costs?
4: or would i just b better off completing my last year of level 2 then doing the level 3 via night college, only problem is at the end i dont sit the AM2 and wont get my JIB?

Any other advice or recommendations welcome.

Thanks Adam.

I remember reading somewhere that this may be available though course may have to be 'full time'

Your local college will be best at advising on this ask for a meeting with the relevant person I've always found them to be hit and miss on the phone.

3. Again get advice but when I asked this a fair few years ago it was a no nvq3 wasn't high enough to qualify, that may have changed.

Its all do able .

What C&G course number are you actually on at the moment, as i don't know any that stop at level 2??

To be graded as an Electrician by the JIB/SJIB these days, you'll need a level 3 foundation course like C&G 2365 or 2357 You'll also need a NVQ level 3. Not too sure about the AM2 these days, but that will normally be taken at the completion of the level 3 foundation course...

Pleased to see a mature student actually going about things the correct way, and not expecting all sorts of considerations because of family and mortgage commitments. Keep it up, it'll be well worth the effort, once you reach your final aim of becoming an electrician....

I think generally they get awarded level 2 prior to progressing on to level 3, though with this sort of self funded course they'll bill for each stage separately.

If it's a gold JIB card your after then as E54 says you'll need the NVQ. And you'll need to sit the AM2 in order to gain the NVQ 3 plus the on site diary etc. from what iv heard it's only funded upto 24 but you could give the student loan people a call. I can't see them turning you down I don't think it's just for higher education

I have been doing my 2365 since September so not completed year 1 of level 2 but I've just been employed by an electrical firm that are putting me on block release from September so I've left the evening class until then

Over 24s the gov sometimes pays half but I've personally never heard of anyone get this help, it's all about how much money they have spare

I wouldn't worry to much, the apprenticeship has just been deceased by the gov, it's now a little over ÂŁ500 per year from what my college advisor told me

I believe we can get a loan but I think we need to be on level 3 of the 2365, not sure of the requirements for an apprenticeship

I personally would do the apprenticeship on block release if u can, u will still be paid by your firm when doing 2 weeks at college so long as they are happy, do it, plus you don't have to work all day and then go to college at night

Good luck

I've seen older people in training mate, although they were referred as adult trainees instead of apprentices, like others have said speak to your local college, you have the benefit of having a work placement during your education, some haven't been so lucky all the best anyway

Not too sure about the AM2 these days

The AM2 won't explicitly be required, however when undertaking an Apprenticeship it is a requirement towards achieving the NVQ Level 3 (essentially it is a unit of the NVQ).

Adult Trainees may be exempt from the AM2 requirement (however this is only my understanding and it should be confirmed).
