Hi Everyone,

recently been going into flats and noticed several have been runnung cookers on a 32amo mcb and using a 2.5mm ring, does anyone else find this strange? I apreciate it is a way of minimising the cables sizes and mcb's you need to buy but doesn't really leave much movement!

other peoples views please!

with this in mind I have a 30amp tumble dryer to be installed, if this is exceptable then rather than me using 6 or 10mm like a powershower or cooker unit, this would shorly mean I could run a 2.5 ring to a fixed appliance connection and both the wire and 32amp mcb would be exceptable!

I always like to air on the side of caution, but, would apreciate other peoples views.

thanks

What do you mean that you've seen a cooker on a 2.5mm ring? Do you mean a dedicated ring just for the cooker? Or do you mean the cooker is plugged into the kitchen ring circuit?

Quite frequently flats have fairly low powered ovens (3kW or less) which are supplied with 13A plugs and so can be simply plugged in.

But I don't think says anything about how you might connect your 30A tumble dryer...

What your describing, is a parallel circuit, if both the cables follow the same route and are supplying a single load!!
Nothing in the regs as far as i know to say you couldn't use such a circuit, so long as all the parameters are met....

Time wise though, it's going to take you longer to install, and will probably cost a little more, than say a single 6mm cable!!

Depends on the power rating of the cooker but most cookers can be run on a 32A MCB because the power is switching on and off as the thermostats kick in and they are not run for long. The use of 2x2.5mm in parallel is odd but may be the electrician had that cable available at the time. As engineer54 says no regs against it, just more work.
For a tumble drier at 30A the current could run for a while but will obviously be fine on a 32A MCB. If the cable is clipped direct then you could use a 4mm radial.
