Hi I was wondering what certificate is required for changing just one 32A mcb to 40A mcb. It for 8.5 kw shower replacement, 15 meter of wiring is existing 10mm2 clipped to wall and there is a 45A shower isolator in meter cupboard.

Minor works mate. "additions or alterations" showing the alteration you have done with all test results for the circuit you've altered.

Just for the sake of being a crusty old so and so. MEIWC in the notes

"But not for replacement of distribution boards or similar items"

Is a similar item a switch fuse or switch isolator say, or as it names distribution board would that similar item be protection devices

I have to admit I have always done an EIC for this, but I would not loose too much sleep if someone did a MEIWC for it, as it does have all the relevant tests, ahhhhhhhhh don't we love the IET

Thanks for pointing that out Malcolm, I was told to fill in a EIC for changing a circuit onto a rcd and a MEIWC for changing the mcb. I stand corrected and so do my certifications from now on. Apologise to I=P/U :).

Thank you all, as I am not member of Elcsa, Nic, Napit yet, EIC means I must inform the building control. What happens if the CU is old crabtree and new 40A MCB is wylex as TLC said crabtree do not make similiar mcbs any more or may be building control not interested in make and model etc? This is going to be my first EIC with building control thats why I am asking minor details like this.

Rigby according to your OP your changing it from a 32a to a 40a, so your changing the circuit characteristic especially the operating values for the device.

If you were changing a 32amp crabtree with say a 32amp wylex then to be honest you could most likle get away without issuing any cert. As the old board will definitely not be rated to BS 60439 UK Annex ZA, then mixing the manufacturers, is not going to really make much difference.

Don't start off getting confused with MEIWC and EIC and part P, there are many times when working in Part P special locations and special installations when only a MEIWC is required, and you still need to self certificate or notify, say adding extra lights or sockets to an existing circuit in a kitchen, and you extend an existing circuit with fixed cable. MEIWC but still comes under Part P notification

I'm just wondering if you would need a 40A Breaker on a 8.5KW unit?? I doubt very much if they will come close to ever using the shower at full throttle, not unless the have skin like leather...

You don't have to notify when replacing equipment, irrespective of the cerificate used.

Malcomsanford and spinlondon:
Thank you for further clarifying meiwc, eic and part p. These is very useful post for me to understand this jigsaw of becoming domestic electrician.
engineer54:
All showers and cookers around this area seem to be on 32A mcbs, but the new shower that I am going to install (Triton T80Gsi) has manfacturer's instruction that it must be installed with 40A mcb. I did come accross a shower that was used for 20 minutes approx and ended up burning wires near entry point of 32A mcb. I have not reached that high experience yet so I prefer to be on safe side and fit 40A mcb.

Think technically you have to notify when your changing the circuit characteristics, ie changing the protection device

Table 1 of the approved document gives examples of non notifiable work and replacing fixed electrical equipment that does not require additional fixed wiring is as spin says not notifiable, but note B states

b) if the circuit protective measures are unaffected.

Changing the shower itself, even to a more powerful model, is non notifiable, as Table 1 do not actually mentions like for like, but because your changing the MCB from 32amp to 40amp note B will come into affect.

I would say that technically you would need to notify this.

Having not done Part P for a little while, I think the spin is right as that replacing equipment is not notifiable, that includes protection devices

Note be B is for enclosures of an existing installation

Re 32A mcb, it'll run at about 35.5Amps all day. Changing it to a 40A won't stop any melting cable! 10mm2 more than man enough.

Watch out for loose / poor terminations they're the tinkers.
