Discuss 4mm Supplementary Bonding for new kitchen install?? in the Periodic Inspection Reporting & Certification area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi, not wishing to upset anyone here but I'd like to add a comment from experience that may be useful if anyone sees it in the future. I have heard of Kitchen sinks tarnishing and on replacement still going dull in patches. On investigation the bonding conductor was missing. This was back in the days of the 15th BTW.

On connecting up the sink the problem was solved. Now there was no further investigation but its my guess that there was some leaking current passing through the sink that promoted the corrosion. The bonding conductor provided a safe path to ground for this errant current.

It may be that regardless what the regs say you may need to bond a conductive part for other reasons than the need for shock protection.

I think I might have investigated further if I believed a metallic sink was 'passing leaking current'.

The regulations are so clear on bonding requirements yet these discussions crop up on a regular basis, did I ever say that I'd make Guidance Note 8 compulsory?

If in doubt, bond it! As the saying goes, "its better to be looking at it than for it!!"

'If in doubt bond it' if you don't understand bonding requirements and distributed fault currents on metalwork that should not be bonded...
