i started a new apprenticeship a few weeks ago (5357)

As it happens 9 of us (30-35 where enrolled) have level 2. So what they've done is put us 9 into a separate group and we don't have to complete 4 of the units within the course. At first I thought they meant the units at the level 2, however it turns out they mean for the entire course.

Basically what that means is I don't have to do H+S, science, terminations and 17th.

My biggest concern which I raised, (although I imagine no one would have liked me to highlight this) was I have only done 202 electrical sciences so if I don't have to do any more science then I won't have to do 302. The response was the previous 202 for the past 2 years was seen as just as complicated as 302 so the 202 is good enough to amit me from anymore science within this apprenticeship.

I'm actually a little disappointed. I enjoyed the science when I did 202 and tbh if I don't have to do 302 I feel I won't have the depth of knowledge previous apprentices would have.

I'm a bit surprised at this. It's true that some of the learning outcomes that were previously in the 2365-02 are now considered to be level 3 material (a.c. theory and quantities in star/delta) but there's a whole load of stuff you won't have covered (supply and distribution systems; d.c. machines and a.c. motors; operating principles of different electrical components; electrical lighting systems; electrical heating; electronic components). My understanding is that the "new" equivalent L2 stuff is assessed using an on-line multi choice exam (5357-003) and the "new" equivalent L3 stuff is assessed by a written paper (5357-103). I can understand them transferring your 2365 202 credits over to cover the 003, but not the 103.

I would seek assurances that C&G are happy with the arrangement your college has said.

H&S is pretty much directly equivalent. Terminations - not sure about that, but I guess it was covered/assessed in your 204? And 17th... if you have this as a separate qualification (2382-15), then this is directly equivalent to the 5357 016 unit, as far as I can tell.

If it's all above board then you (and your fellow apprentices) are golden. You can always read the relevant sections of the book, and do the SmartScreen worksheets and activities off your own back if you're really keen! :)

... ah, here we go. From the C&G 5357 website

http://cdn.cityandguilds.com/Produc...Electrotechnical_RPL_July_2017_draft_V1-0.pdf

RPL is "recognition of prior learning." Have a look at the first column on page 3. If you've done the 2365 level 2 (but not the level 3), then you don't have to do H&S (both assessments), 003 (the multi-choice science bit) or 107 (terminations).

I would point this document out to your college. Then hide from your mates, who will begrudge you for having to do the hard science stuff! :)

Interestingly, C&G have just this morning updated the RPL document. It is at: http://cdn.cityandguilds.com/Produc...ts/Electrotechnical_RPL_September_2017_V4.pdf

(It also contains info of RPL for those converting 2365 to 2357, as well as those converting 2365 to 5357).

My wife says I was murmuring in my sleep last night. I suspect it was C&G qualification (and unit) numbers...! Just sat through a webinar about changes to the 2365 course... jeez! :expressionless:

Also, as a general point... if you post a question, and someone takes the time to reply, it's nice to be polite... maybe say "thanks" or just click one of the buttons. :) Jus' sayin' ;)
