5kw inverter on 4 kW system??

Hi All, I am new to the Forum and just have a quick question re G83 regs and inverter size?

If you have a 4kW system (made up of 16 No. 250w Mono modules) is it possible and with the UK regulation to install a 5kW inverter??

I am being told I can as the maximum size of system is 4kw (well probably 10% below this) so all it really is an over-spec'd inverter?? Its not 3 phase and is same as the 4kW but only has a higher maximum capacity.

Will it stop me from acquiring FIT??

Is it possible? Yes. But you would need to speak to the DNO as this would effectively be above the G83 limit of 16A. This system would have the capability of producing over 3.68kWh and therefore DNO permission is required.

Is it desirable? In my opinion, no. The system is oversized and therefore probably inefficient.

Without going into all the reasons why, your system would produce more with a 3600tl inverter, if your install company think that that inverter is the right choice, I hate to think what the rest of the design and install is like...
