Hi Guys, new to the forum and would appreciate some advice.

I have a 4000 g pond and I'm intending to heat(temp control really) it this winter as it's far more beneficial for the koi.
I have a 6kw heater and pond is approx 40 mtr from the main consumer unit.
Would it be ok to use 10mm T&E wired directly into 40 amp outlet of RCD and then place it in protective casing en route to shed, where the heater will be.

Basically it's the length of run I'm worried about, will the cable suffice.

ps.... cable will be placed through very strong ducting and fixed to wall approx 9' high, so no danger of anyone touching it anyway
cheers
Carl

You've lost me with a lot of this ..... can you give idiots guide so that I can get stuff ready for leccy to install, what is tncs, cpc, etc
thanks
Carl

if it helps, the mains cable coming into house is a big armour wired cable(house built circa 1880's) and then meter tails go directly from the main supply to the meter and then from meter to CU

I would ask your leccy to give you a list of materials simples

you are ok its a TNS supply so just run the cable.
10mm will be fine i would get 3 core for a **** hot earth to new cu but rember to connect steal wire to eatth to.
use 40A mcb from house if u can but rember to put rcd in shed cu
have you a electric shower cos if 40A on heater 40A on electric shower then make a cup of t and have lights on and have u electric heating.

you will be ok but what power u using with pond heater?[/quote]

you mean like economy 7 sort of thing ?

just normal, no economy 7.....it's only for the really coldest months.... dec/jan/feb and it's just to control temp........it is heated as such but controlled, rather than suffering too much temp fluctuations, and it will have a polytunnel built over it this year to help keep heat in

the shower is run directly off combi..... the CU in shed has got 4 protected(RCD) switches and I think 5/6 non RCD

sounds like it will cost a bomb to run this 6kw heater! I doubt very much that you would need anything so powerfull.
How much is electric nowadays 15p a kw/hr ? times 6 =90p an hour
you might find it a lot cheaper to run a small bore loop of plastic pipe off the central heating system controlled via a thermostat/froststat and motorised valve etc.

I have a big pong with about 15 KOI, I don't know why you would want to heat the water seeing as fish are cold blooded? Im no fish expert but can't get my head around this :D

The pond freezes over, and I wait for spring until I see the fish again
