hi all i am wiring a new build house and have been told i can not put
any more than 6 lights on a switch anyone else heard of this
or know where the reg comes from

Very interesting, and only a recomendation.

So 6 lights is correct if they are all 16 watts each

So it could be 20 x 5 watt lights

And more inportantly, this is NOT in BS 7671 so why do we need to do this?

Certficates we sign off, confirm compliance to BS 7671 , nothing else!

No wonder the trade is in a pickle!

its hard enough keeping up with bs 7671 without all the mad building regs as well, like fuseboard heights ,exteact fan flow rates etc

Hit, nail and head spring to mind.

Who says we need to know any of this?

I don't recall Elecsa or Stroma ever sending me any relevent information on this stuff.

just had my latest nic visit and they dont seem to know half the building reg updates it would be good if we were sent updates
i have not seen much in things like profesional electrician or electrical times that tell you of building reg changes

FFS most people are installing LED's now with hardly any current draw, wind them up and say balancing 6 lamps on a switch is a bit like playing reverse Jenga but connecting all 6 to a switch should be fine.

Are they under 25 spotty and nervous on a building site.

Part L of the building regulations applies

Ha ha at last, if you do not do this it is illegal!!
The building regs are law, they say if you provide or extend a controlled fitting part L applies and part L says you should follow the DBSCG. QED
The idea is ill thought out it should avoid lots of unnecessary lights being turned on however it is really thinking you should not turn on all ds lights just to go into the hall and misses the rest.
Since competent person schemes are there to ensure br compliance this is exactly what they should be telling us about.
However it has been in place for years.

Clearly I have been missed off the circulation lists, AND none of my 8 annual "inspections" have mentioned anything these lines.

Remind me again what the CPS's are supposed to do?

My read of the guide posted in #10 :
- 6 lamps per switch is the normal max
And
- 100W is not to be exceeded.
I'm going to have to take more drugs because this makes my head hurt :constructionworker:

Reminds me of the time a sparky was spouting off in the wholesalers about it being illegal to fit sockets/switches within 3m of a bathroom.
I asked him if he's sure about that and he was adamant. Started going on about all these sockets and light switches you have on landings now need to be blanked off and fitted 3m away from the bathroom door. Told him he's half way there but it's 3m from zone 1 in a room containing a bath or shower. He wasn't having any of it and told me I didn't know what I was on about.
It's not very often I laugh in peoples faces but I couldn't help myself.
