Was working at a house today that had a 6mm earth which obviously needs to be upgraded but was just wondering when this size or if this size has ever been acceptable?

The minimum csa of the main earthing conductor must be determined by the adibiatic equation or selected from Table 54.7 543.1.1.
If the adibiatic equation is used, the minimum csa of the main earthing conductor must be 6mm 544.1.1. apart from a PME system.

Isnt that the Reg for Main protective Bonding Conductors Sintra Mate !

You can use 6mm as the earthing conductor on a TT system

6mm on a TT is in itself over the top of for what would be adequate, its mechanical damage that causes it to require the monster size 6mm

You would treat it as a TT installation.
