Hi
I'm buying a new kiln and wonder which is best on a 60 amp supply in an old house. I have a choice of 7 kw or 9 kw. Will the 9 kw Trip if I run the shower at the same time? Have been advised to install a 50w breaker for the 9 kw.

9kw kiln will pull around 39amps
7kw kiln will pull around 30amps

The Electric showers are quite large as well, usually around 8 or 9kw

I wouldn’t be taking a shower and using the kiln at the same time. When do you propose to use the kiln?

If you were needing electric heating and hot water my thought would be - no, it's too much for 60A. The cost of a service upgrade to 100A will be set by your electricity supplier. Perhaps a call to the Customer Service number on your bill will get you the right number to call, just a thought :)

Hi,it is impossible to say if OK,without knowing the state and type of your arrangement, but seeing as the kiln load will cycle, and it is easy to arrange operation when other loads are off,it should be straightforward.

We have a family friend who ran such a kiln, for 20+ years,on a 60A supply, until they upgraded the main fuse during a meter swap.

Knowing the condition and details of installation are critical.
For instance, finding out your pottery shed is 200 meters down the garden, will get a chorus of sighs...:)

Yes the shed is down the garden. DH says the wiring going to the shed is 16 core. I've attached photos of the fuse board and breaker.
Central heating is oil so just a pump circulating the hot water.

Looking at that board I’d guess this is in Ireland.

To be honest that ABB board is a shambles and needs to be sorted out by a competent electrician before you start planning additions to the installation.
