Hi all,
I would appreciate your advice on a shower I installed in myhouse over the weekend.
Please note, whilst I carried out the installation I haveevery intention of having it properly checked over / signed off by aelectrician friend when he returns from holiday next week. The reason I am onhere is because something is not right and it will drive me mad wondering. I didconsider myself ‘competent’ having once been NAPIT registered myself but Iguess that might not be the case so please go easy with any abuse!
The shower is 9.5Kw, the cable is 10mm, approx 12m long, clipped direct towalls all the way except where it passes through a floor into the airingcupboard where it goes via a DP isolator switch on the inside wall of the cupboard.
Bottom line is, whilst I have 240v to the shower input terminals, it is notworking. Also, the operation of the isolator switch has confused me a little (interms of the neon status). I have attached a diagram of the installation alongwith more detail on what the neon is doing and would welcome feedback (andconstructive criticism).

Many thanks, B.

Hi,

I assume as you have been Napit registered that you have some electrical knowledge? If so my first point of call would be to carry out safe isolation and check all of your connections, especially the DP isolating switch. Then carry out the required electrical tests before energizing the circuit. Also take into account what other checks you need to perform in this location. If you are not confident in any of these procedures then isolate and await for the return of your electrician friend.

See, no abuse

Regards.

My money is on the switch being incorrectly wired, as the neon only illuminates under load. As stated previously check the switch wiring and in case of any doubt isolate the circuit at the CU and await the arrival of your qualified electrician.

Thanks Retrosparks for the follow up, certainly the neon is not doing what I would have expected so will take another look tonight.

Rechecked the isolator switch and all looked to be fine but took the switch off anyway and checked it by wiring a plug to it. It worked exactly as expected. Stripped back a couple mm more insulation on theneutral to the shower, re-fitted the switch and bingo everything now works. Thanks for all the feedback ...10mm cable is a real bugger to prep and connectright so that is a lesson learnt for me.

serves you right for using 10mm when 6mm would have been adequate. :furious3:
