Anyone know a good book on ac motors nothing to mathematical or theoretical just the basics on motors and controls

I have read the thread mentioned it's way to far advanced for anything I am likely to be involved in, all I need to know is how can I tell what type of speed control I need for a commercial kitchen extract system, it got a on off switch at present which means it runs a full tilt all the time I dont normally get involved in this stuff but, I have done aload of work for them and I kinda feel obliged, it is a two wre system at present but if I fit a variable speed controller will all the magic be done at the controller or will I need to run a permanent live to the run cap

Whilst you're finding a suitable book I'm sure we can help you out some. You shouldn't need any extra wiring for the run capacitor.

You mentioned kitchen extraction, is it commercial or domestic.
Do you know what type of motor it is (TEAO or TEFC perhaps) and is the fan bifurcated or is the motor in the extracted air stream?
A make and model number would be first prize if you know it.

If it's just a standard wall extract fan, you can get a unit that will fit a standard switch 25mm back box. Looks exactly like a dimmer unit with a fan symbol embossed on the knob. Didn't take that much notice of the 3 i used for ceiling fans in my case, but can remember the instruction leaflet showing use for wall fans too... This was in Cyprus, but these units was made by and came from a British company, maybe Select, ...something like that anyway!!
Quite cheap too... lol!!

This is a commercial vent axia tp500-14 single phase at present its got a on off switch for full speed, I can get a controller, but, will the motor accept and run at variable speeds with this controller a, efsc 10, or will I need to alter the wiring from the controller to the motor
Thanks for all your help thus far

The fan is 1.4 kW (7.3A FLC) which is a bit large for a dimmer type speed control module but it can be speed controlled without extra wiring.
To ensure minimum noise levels during speed control an auto transformer or inverter speed controller is recommended
A couple of thing you should be aware of;
Firstly there will be a minimum RPM that the fan can run at without overheating. Make sure you set that minimum speed correctly on the speed controller to prevent motor damage.
Secondly the motor has a thermal overload device built into it. The wires for this device should be in the fan connection box and should be wired back to the DOL starter or the appropriate contacts in the speed controller so the supply is disconnected if the motor overheats. This is especially important if the motor is speed controlled.

I did look at that site tony but it refers only to vent axia controllers at ÂŁ200 odd quid, I was looking for a generic controller but I needed to know what was involved, I think I will be refering this job on I had another look yesterday and it looks like someone has altered the wiring in the motor terminal box and there is some evidence of overheated connections
