Well after a day out with davesparks (thanks mate) I have learnt not only learnt how to do a proper earth rod test at a special location but now have some experience outside domestic instillations. After a warm welcome he set about giving me a guided tour of the festival and the power system that would be feeding it, all of which he was in charge of (scary face). It was all very exciting and interesting if not slightly daunting and although I probably only took in 50 per cent of what he said and the answers he gave to my questions I still learnt a hell of a lot so a big thumbs up from me.

Im hoping to use it as part of my nvq which I start in September and hopefully finish a few months after!

I have put all the data we collected into excel and produced a graph to show the results but Im not sure how I can display them in this post to see what you guys think the results are telling me.

does anyone know how to do this please?

Hi Dave ;-). That would be brilliant mate I really enjoyed working with you and felt at ease asking you questions. For the first time ever I was getting some proper in depth answers and explanations. The BBQ was very nice and the chap who cooked it was a nice fella to, they all were really. quite how you managed to eat three bacon enfused cheese burgers and 2 sausages I still don't know but it looked effortless. I forgot to say we also set up a current reader device. Basically over the course of the festival this cool little gadget would take a current reading every 5 seconds for 1.7days (that what we programmed it for) and from it he would be able to tell how much power was used and if his calculations were right. What these calculations were I don't know but that's another question for another day perhaps.

The the good news is that I'm going back to my old college to complete my Nvq it's going to cost me £500 but hopefully it will be money well spent.

Geordie a Mod has the world gone mad or am I dreaming, let me just rub my eyes and take another look.
---- I'm not dreaming.!!

Those test results don't make any sense to me at all?? What's with the tiny distances mentioned here?? If anything, the testing distances would be ''Starting'' at 15 m rather than finishing at 15m!!!

Testing distance was set by the maximum extend of the test leads supplied with the earth rod tester, I know it's not ideal but I hope i've given him a better idea of testing than the last guy who I think showed him how to bash the rod in till it got hard and then hope for the best.

My understanding of the correct way to do it is to set the C test-electrode at 10x teh length of the rod away (1.2M rod in this case) and then set the P test-electrode at intervals along a straight line between them whilst keeping the test leads away from each other. Then you draw a graph of the results expecting to see a steep rise which levels off and then rises again, Ra value being read off at the point where it levels off (should be 2/3rds of the distance between electrode and C test-electrode)

And now before you tell me off for only going down 1.2M this installation was a temporary power supply for a festival into very wet ground (love the british summer), it was removed again less than 72Hours later so didn't have chance to change much.
