thanks

Hello Mate

If you look in GN3 Its all in there also another good book is Chris Kitcher inspection and testing all the answers are there.

JS

1) the works does not include a new circuit
2) the protective device is not changed
3)..........let you work out a 3rd

Good luck

I'm not sure your reply answers the question. The answer is:
Every alteration /addition:
1. Must comply with current BS7671
2. Must not impair the safety of the existing installation
3. In order to verify point one above, any part of the existing installation to which the addition/alteration depends on for compliance must itself be inspected and tested. For example, continuity of protective conductors and Zs.

With due respect those answers are too vague, it asks specifically for conditions that must apply For Minor work certificate is to be issued. Just saying it must comply with bs7671 is a given...... My 3rd answer would be that when the cable is replaced is must be like for like same size and length

I'm not trying to be funny just trying to help. One of reasons why there is always very low success rates in this exam is because candidates do not fully read and understand the question before putting pen to paper.

The question posted in the O.P:
Identify three conditions that must apply if a minor works certificate installation works certificate is to be issued.
Your proposed answers:
1) the works does not include a new circuit This is a scenario where a MEIWC could be used but that wasn't asked for in the question.
2) the protective device is not changed No relevance to the question asked.
3) that when the cable is replaced is must be like for like same size and length No relevance to the question asked.

Most of the answers come from GN3 and/or BS7671 so you don't have to invent made up ones of your own. My answers come from p13 of GN3 which also sign posts the reader to relevant regs in BS7671

JP just asked my tutor I'm on my 2394 corse today!!! (Exam today) he said your answers are not relevant to the question being asked and that mine are model answers.....OP please answer the question with what you are happy with the answers above are are the opinions of me/tutor and JP

Unfortunately Ducksy both you and your tutor are incorrect.
There is nothing prohibiting the use of a MEIWC when replacing either the CPD or replacing part of the circuit wiring with cable that has differing characteristics.
The main criteria for isuing an MEIWC, is that the work does not involve the introduction of a new circuit.
The second criteria, is that the work covered by the MEIWC does not relate to more than a single circuit.
Not particuarly aware of a third criteria, other than the work must not involve the replacement of a DB or similar. However to my mind, that would be covered by the second criteria.

Thats unfortunate but there are other reasons why success rates are low other than candidates not reading and understandingb the question properly. I think you all might be confusing what the MEIWC can be USED for and whether or not it can be ISSUED. As I have highlighted above the word in the question is ISSUED.

Try p103 in GN3.

I cant argue with Jurassic on this one, he has hit it fairly and squarely. How can his answers be vague, he has put it word perfect, how else can you add to them, and what would you gain, he has answered the questions concise and straight to the point.

Minor works,

Must not be a new circuit.
It can be an addition or alteration
It must not impair the existing installation
It must comply with current regs etc etc.

Just like he said in a lot less words, which leaves time for more difficult questions in the exam.

How can you install a cable like for like on a minor, if there wasnt one there to start with.....addition to an existing circuit springs to mind. i have yet to do an addition and not put a cable in!

Cheers...........Howard

cheers for your replies guys, see this is the thing there seems to be 2 sides to every argument regarding most questions,

i have another question that i would like some guidance with,

state three different practical situations that may require the sense of sight during the inspection of a steel trunking containment system.

my answers would be:
proximity to non electrical services
selected erected and routed to avoid ingress of water
holes surrounding trunking made good

id just like to know if im on the right wave length or if im barking up the wrong tree, are these answers correct/ in the right direction

cheers in advance

with regards to my original question,

identify three conditions which must apply if a minor electrical installation works certificate is to be issued.

would the answer not be,
the installation must be designed, constructed, inspected and tested in accordance with bs7671.

The answers come from GN3. Section 2.6.3 lists a very detailed inspection checklist for all aspects of the installation. For your question pick anything from the middle of p29. I think you've already been there as your 3 answers are listed.

I've already given you the model answers from Gn3 and BS7671. :confused5:
