A late (very) career change

Hi Guys

I am about to embark on a new career, that of Electrician. I have some experience: I was in the RAF for 9 years as an aircraft electrician, which gives a basic grounding, but nowhere near enough knowledge to be a professional electrician.

I have been alerted to the slew of 'fast track' training courses which seem to good enough, but cost plenty. I could also buy the courses and examas from DOMLEC (heard of them? - are they any good?)

I think if I go this route ai am going to need to get some 'electricians mate' experience, which I will be happy to do, if I can get it.

I am not sure of the availability of such work though, as yet. Forums such as this invariably provide an extremely valuable resource and service to indutries like this, so I will be frequenting it (probably) every day!!

Anyone sees or knows something they think I should know and are willing to share, I will be very grateful.

I look forward to interacting with some of you guys in due course.

Ah, that's very interesting. Haven't the regs changed at all since then? It was something I was considering, too...the search continues. Thanks for thr heads up, there.

Try local colleges for the courses you need to take and search on here for training courses.
Electricians mates jobs are a bit few and far between and you normally need some qualifications first!
Ring round and ask and good luck.

Had a look at the local college (Northampton). All they had (P/T) was Electrical Installations BS7671 (start 10th April) and Inspection and testing of Electrical Equipment.

Had a visit from the NCS (New Career Skills) guy yesterday (yes he came out on a Saturday, and at 8pm too!). I was quite impressed with what he said and I agreed with him that, if I am serious about being an electrician, I can't play at it by doing a 'Fast Track' course of 5 or 6 weeks.

I think I will go for it, completing it in, probably, 12 months. I will get all the experience in as I can, then, although not fully competent in terms of experience, at least I will have something with which to call myself an electrican. Then I will start learning to do the job.

I recommend you take the C&G2357 course part time two evenings a week at Northampton College. That is what I am doing at the moment. You will not be able to start until next Sept but it is the best way to learn. It will though take three years to get the complete qualification. And in the meantime get as much practical experience as you can. Keep reading everything on this forum and get some trade magazines and Regs books etc.

I looked on the Northampton College website and couldn't find the course you mention. Anyway, I can't afford to wait three years to get going

I have decided to do the New Career Skills course. I realise it's a short course and practical experience will be lacking, but I am prepared to work my proverbials off to gain that.
