I need to add an outside light from an existing 2 way circuit.

I plan to change the plate from 1 gang to 2 gang which will accommodate both outside light and existing living room lights.

The problem is that there is no permanent live at the switch I need to feed from. The way its wired means there is only a switch line to the existing lights and a pair of strappers.

Would it work to link 1 and 2 from the strappers and link into 1 on the 1 way switch, switch line to outside light in common? The only problem I can see is that there will be a small interruption of supply to the outside light everytime the 2 way is operated. Not sure if it will be enough time to create a problem?

No. Try and reconfigure the switch at the other 2 way to carry a live right through to where you need it.

have you got a neutral at the switch you’re trying to use?

The floor boards are easily removed in the upstairs. I could interrupt the supply to the other switch, JB a perm line supply to the switch. I'd rather not have the extra joints though

Neutral but no live?

how’s this wired? T&E and 3 cores?

can you photograph the connections at the other switch, and what you’ve got there.
doesn’t sound too difficult.

Ok. Now I’ve looked at your drawing.......

might be a job for quinetic or smart switch.

At the first 2 way switch there is a supply twin and earth and a 2 core and earth.

At the other 2 way switch there is a twin and earth to the existing lights and the other end of the 3 core and earth.

Ok. So not enough cores. Will only work if one of the strappers is live, or the switchwire up to the interior light is live

or do away with the 2 way interior light.... 1 way from either switch.

or quinetic or other generic remote control gadget.

They defo want the 2 way switching.

I think I may just take a feed from the supply cable that goes to the 1st switch and run it to the 2nd switch. That way the 1st gang on the 2and switch works as it did and the other has a perm supply and switch return using a t+e cable

"It works" and "it's safe" are not necessarily the same thing. With DIY work, they are often far from the same thing.
