Hi, I am wondering how to add in a new sky plus tv point to an installation. Obviously I know how to run the double cable(unsure of correct name) ans connect at new position end, it's just the connection behind the existing tv ie at the existing box I am unsure of how to do? Can u just split as per normal co ax cables? Or is it best to run new cable from dish as oppose to existing sky box? Thanks

Hi, you must never split a feed from a satellite dish. Each individual co-ax cable comes from an individual LNB on the dish, and the Sky box needs control over one LNB for each tuner. What exactly are you wanting to do?

Ok thanks for that. All The customer wants is to be able to watch sky tv downstairs in their house, they currently just have one sky plus box in living room and want a cable ran down to new position downstairs. I am just unsure best way to do this connection wise?

You cannot cut into a sky cable it will not work first of all check the dish as that little cone thing on the end of the pole is an LNB

Once you get that then look at what the customer has ie SKY , SKY+, Sky multiroom So if they have sky+ then they will have 2 cables between the box and dish because SKY+ is a 2 channel receiver the older SKY dishes have either a single LNB or a twin LNB but if you have SKY+ then they just fit a quad or 4 way LNB. You may have to upgrade the LNB I did this when I had SKY and a free to air sat receiver but now I have
SKY+ 2 channel
SKY multirooms 1 channel
Panasonic TV with HD SAT built in 1 channel

So add these up and I have used all 4 inputs on the LNB

If you look at the back of the receiver you will see 3 x sockets (aerial in, RF1,RF2). You need to connect your coax to RF2, if your just connecting one tv then run the coax directly to the set. If you need more than one set this would connect this to a distribution amplifier. If you fit a remote eye to the set downstairs this will allow you to control the box from there. Hope this helps

If they have a Sky+HD box another option is to use an HDMI port splitter/replicator and run an HDMI cable to the other TV. You would still need to run a length of coax from the RF2 to a magic eye in the other room (but not actually connected to the TV) to allow them to change channel etc. from the second location. The huge benefit of this is that they will get full HD picture in second room and stereo sound. Using the RF2 out for picture and sound is easier (and cheaper)....but the picture can be quite grainy and is subject to interference...and the audio is mono. I have installed many HDMI distribution systems and the one I propose here is really dead simple but gives the customer a much better viewing experience IMHO.

And just to be clear....if they only have the one Sky box in the whole house....then sharing this to another room has nothing to do with the satellite feeds at all, so leave them well alone!

Pad66 thanks for your advice, can I do the quick easy way you suggested and connect the co ax from rf2 on original box to the new box then to the second tv set as oppose to straight to set with magic eye?as they have a spare sky plus box they want to use. Obviously the record option wouldn't work just picture?

The way i have described is to connect a single box to another tv. If you want to use another receiver you will need to run two additional cables to the dish or use shotgun cable (two cables molded together). They also might require and additional viewing card depending on what they subscribe to. Hope this helps

Okay yes thanks that does help the best way in this instance will be to run a shotgun cable as you described from the dish to the new sky box and tv I think! Just have slight access problem but il manage to source some ladders! Thanks
