adding to pyro circuits

afteroon all,

as the title says, i have been to a house where they would like a couple of extra sockets in their garage. it is wired in pyro, testing out results all seem ok. how can i add to pyro? does it need to be pyro?

I'ts not that long ago, this question would probably not have been asked. The extension to the existing socket outlet would have been extended in the same sized MICC cable as a matter of course!! The chance of that extension being wired in a different wiring method would have been slim, if at all!!!

These day's, it seems that only the older sparks, and very, very few of the younger sparks have any idea how to run, dress, and most importantly terminate and gland a MICC cable. ....It's sad really!!!

I agree with what you're saying fiddy, but the other drawback with wanting to do it in MI to keep it the same is trying to get some MI cable.

Unless you've an offcut of 20 odd metres kicking around in your shed you'd have to order a minimum of 100M and wait a week for it to arrive, not to mention the cost. At least you would round my way anyway.

MI is making a bit of a comeback, in the healthcare sector at least, as the last 3 fire alarm jobs I've done have all been in MI.

its not just that e54, i think its economics. Ivenever used pyro since college, (im 24), but if i had a chance of specifying it for a job, then i would, because i would re-learn how to use it, and i relish the chance to try new things. The problem is that the customer will often refuse to use you for the job, as it is so expensive, and time consuming. even if they do accept the price, and have the work done in pyro, you probably wont get any future works from them, or their contacts, when word gets about, about how much you charged.

Pyro is my favourite cable. Its absolutely brill.
Done a few churches and the like with it, fab for outside lights. How people get in a mess with it is totally beyond me.

Ah, but the time i'm talking about, which is not that long ago really, the local sparks would have had those off-cuts in the back of the van or shed. And at that time you could by the stuff by the metre/yard or came in 25/50/100 coils, or by special order upto 500m/yards...

Going back a lot further, i used to go out every Fri afternoon after school and Saturdays helping my sparky uncle, mainly on small commercial and domestic jobs that he specialised in. He did loads of MICC work in offices and shops. I have no idea these days the cost of MICC cable, so can't comment on that side of things, but in those days it was probably around 20/22% on top of the cost using conventional wiring methods.

Haha!! So i was dressing and making MICC pots off when i was around 14 or 15yrs old!! Never used SWA cable much, only mainly for direct buried work, my uncle didn't trust it much and always ran the stuff in a duct!! Sadly my uncle has long since past on, but still have fond memories of our working time's together. ...He was the mentor for me entering into the Electrical industry!!

Some of the substations we had were all MICC for the control. Jim the electrician’s mate would vanish every Friday afternoon to polish the gear and buff up the MICC runs. The rooms were a pleasure to walk in to, but woe betide you if you didn’t wipe your feet before treading on his polished floor.

It’s beautiful stuff installed right.

Mi does look the part if u have some tray etc to run it on. It is an absolute James to put into existing building fabric. I had to buy a 100metre drum last year of 2l2.5 for a local authority job knocking on the door of 300 quid! Plus terminations.great stuff until you try to alter it IMO. A lost art as previous posts have put but u can see why due to cost
