Advice for a trainee - Taking on jobs

Evening all, ive come here looking for a little bit of advice please

Im currently at college 2 evening per week, and also work full time along side a qualified electrician

I would like to know, would I be allowed to carry out non - notifiable work in my spare time to earn a little extra cash ?

If so, where would I be able to find a list of what work is actually notifiable or not ?

I know im not competent to carry out a lot of jobs, and for that reason it would be very basic things at the minute, changing face plates, light fittings etc... but would be good to know what I could do as I gain more experience

You know and i know, it'll not end with changing face plates and light fittings!! lol!! Nothing much legally to stop you doing anything. Don't suppose you will have even thought of the need for insurance, but then, will an insurance company insure you!! When all said and done, (depending on how far down the line you are in your apprenticeship/training) the best experience you can gather is that when working with an experienced fully qualified mentor.... not trying to hack it alone on a customers home!!

What are the implications of your mentor finding out? (and he WOULD find out!) Is he likely to drop you because he thinks you're taking the pee?

No offence intended james but you must not be very far into your training if you haven't covered notifiable and non notifiable work, best advice would be to carry on learning with your mento, slowly but surely you will learn the CORRECT way without any botched jobs along the way

Are you doing the 2365 at college? i'm in a similar situation although i dont work full time with a spark, i've got a mate i help out on a weekend in order to get my hands on experience.

I've just been asked to fit some LED downlights for my mates sister which i would be comfortable enough doing by myself but i've asked my mate to come along, we worked out a price together and we can go 50/50 on the job.

Speak to the lad you work with and see if he would be interested in a similar arrangement? if the jobs too small for two of you he might not want in on it but he'll be able to give you some advice before you take it on.
