Advice needed please

Hello,

I have installed 3 chandeliers and 6 wall lights (27 bulbs all together 60W each) under one double dimmer swich (chandeliers under one and wall lights under the other) but they burnt after a while being turned on.

Does anybody know if I need a transformer to make it work and what kind? I would really appreciate all ideas.

So thats 1620 watts in total... 840 watts per dimmer.. Need to be 1kw dimmers !!! What are the ones you have been useing?

The bulbs are all 60 Watt small candle ones, there is 15 of them on one dimmer, and 12 on the other. They all worked for a while, but burnt and stopped working after. Thanks a lot

1/ If these are ordinary 230v incandesant bulbs then what would you propose using a transformer for?

2/ What is the total wattage on each circuit?

3/ where is the burning taking place, lights or dimmer? POSSIBLY BAD CONNECTIONS

4/ what is the working current of the dimmer? EITHER TOO LOW OR FAULTY

5/ If all these bulbs are on a single lighting circuit to both dimmers and lit at the same time then it's probable that the circuit is being overloaded

HI,
I would lower the wattage of the bulbs, i.e 20w bulbs. so 20w x 15=300w and 20w x 12=240w. You can get 400w and 250w dimmers that would work ok. Your currently very overloaded for the dimmer module. Or mix the 20w with 40w bulbs, but balance them out evenly for the dimmer ratings.

Roman chances are your dimmer switches are rated at a lower wattage ie dimmer switches are rated at 500w and your 1st circuit is coming in at 900w (15 lamps at 60w = 900w) and 2nd circuit coming in at 720w (12 lamps at 60w) so if your dimmer wattage is lower than your circuit thats why it's burning out.

Two ways to solve this either get dimmers that are able to cope with the wattage of each circuit or Lower the wattage of the lamps to suit the dimmers, I would go with the 1st one if it was me mate.

I will go with the first suggestion, as my dimmer has already burnt. Thanks for your advice!

Thats gonna be an expensive dimmer lol to dim that much wattage. Is it a football pitch your lighting lol

Richmond lighting do high capacity dimmers, you may need to split the dimmers and have two single gang one's next to one another, I've seen some on their website that have a 1KW capacity for tungsten filament lamps . It also fits a 25mm back box.

If both dimmers are fed form the same lighting circuit, you may need to upgrade the circuit suppy cable and possibly the breaker/fuse. The total load of both dimmers comes to just over 7 Amps.
