Very true Stuart - well if anyone here is from, or can recommend someone in the Aberdeenshire region, I'd be grateful!

Hello - now in new house - here's a picture of the consumer unit. Had an electrician round - doesn't think needs rewiring (phew!) - will charge about £15-20 to change single sockets to double, or about £40-50 to put in new ones. Also feels needs trip switch unit (did say not necessary but safer) for about £200. Does all this sound reasonable. Not trying to second guess him - seemed a nice chap!
Thanks for any help, Kirsty (PS These are prices for Aberdeenshire)

Looking at the consumer units, which does not give a detailed picture of the installation, but just some broad hints. So the electrician on site can give a much better assessment.
The installation looks like it has earthing and bonding that should be OK (could be updated, perhaps) as far as I can tell.
The left hand Consumer unit (new one) looks very much like it has RCD protection (but cant quite see), so adding sockets on those circuits would be OK.
If the sockets are being added to one of the other consumer units then RCD protection would need to be added.
Prices sound good for south of England, but not sure about Aberdeen, if the £200 is for changing one or more of the consumer units that sounds very cheap, check that the electrician is going to inspect and test all the changed circuits.
Overall sounds like the electrician is talking sense.
Good luck in your new home.
Hope all goes well.

compared to average standard your install looks a bit outdated but done nice and tidy. your electrician seems to be talking sense. may be worth asking him to replace fuse-wire breakers with automatic ones, there are models designed with older fuseboards in mind. will save you messing up with fuse wire in case one blows.

£200 is cheap for an RCD board change in Aberdeenshire. If it's legit and he's going to issue you a certificate I'd go with it. Make sure he's either an NICEIC registered electrician or with SELECT
