Hi all, I'm a 21 year who just returned for Australia, I served a 3 year apprenticeship and also have one year of been fully qualified, I have my 17 th edition regs and also passed my 2391 inspection and test. I'm from the gloucester area, please could you give me advice on further course or job prospect.

Thanks dave

you'd have been better off stopping in australia. the industry here has gone ---- up, to the dogs, down the pan. there's no work about, yet short course wonders are being churned out by the bucketful to fill a so called skills shortage. it 's not skills we're short of, it's work and jobs that are in short supply.

Agree with the others. You should have taken the electricians registration course while you were down under!! I take it that you went over on a 1 year working visa?? If you had done all the bit's to become registered, you could have come back to UK (compulsory on the 1 year working visa) and applied for a full resident working visa.
Know a couple of guys over the years that did exactly that, and to the best of my knowledge are still living and working in Aussie...

I dont agree with the others.

There may be no work in the domestic sector but there certainly is in other's...

Just keep your eye out on the job site's fella and apply. You could do other course's if you wish but you have the qualifications to get a job as is. Depends what you want to do...

I did an apprenticeship, got my NVQ level 3, did the inspection and testing, and then the 2391-20 Design course (called something new now) I'm now doing a degree in Building Services Engineering, so i'm learning Mechanical aswell as Electrical. I go to Uni one day a week. It's not easy and you have to put the effort it, but will be worth it in the end (I hope). The maths is the hardest part, I'm in my first year and its meant to be equivalent to A-Level. Try to get a Company to sponsor you. If failing that, try finding work with a facilities management company doing maintenance. There is a lot of work now in that sector and its cushy.

Contracting has gone to the dogs, domestic market is saturated and more hassle than its worth. Commercial work is too aggressive and no one has time to help you and teach you. It's a dig eat dog world now.
