how far does the duty of care go with testing, my job is to inspect sockets, lights etc affected by flood damage, fires etc, only the affected areas are a concern to the company, but the last few days i have been putting right faults that are nothing to do with the flood, like today i couldnt get r1+r2 on a lighting circuit and i had to swap connections round in unaffected light fittings, this has nothing to do with my job and nothing to do with the insurance but im not sure if i can walk away after iv found it, any help greatly appreciated, oh ye i have failed and walked away from 2 properties because of a insulation resistance problem and zs times, and no cpc at the lighting circuits, i have made the owner aware of it tho, am i doing the right thing??

All you are doing is reporting on the condition of the installation after the flood.

If you find other faults then these should also be noted, as if you were just doing a PIR on request.

You should only carry out the work you have been authourised do and make sure you describe on the cert the exact extent of that work.Any defects with the rest of the installation should be noted on the cert under the recommendations section.
Any defects you consider to be an immediate danger you should issue an electrical danger notice before you leave the job....your rear end is then covered.

so i should just write down the results, note down the problems found and write it as a fail, im a bit unfamiliar with an electrical danger notice, where do i get hold of one? thanks for the help everyone!!

oh and also i have dun a few houses this week that have failed, should i post the electrical danger notice to them do u think, or am i too late??

No offence meant matey....

Get yourself a copy of GN3 and digest the lot.

none taken mate i agree i dont know enough really to be doing it, they told me in the interview there would be a few small tests involved, mainly connecting up temporary supplies, iv got regs, on site guide and gn3, iv dun my testing and inspection, but im new to it and have not got loads of experience doing it, im fine with the actual testing, but it feels like iv forgot the whole theory side! iv always dun it with an electrical company so iv had people to check over my results as they print the sheets but i havent got that here, i told the company im new to it and they sed its ok, then i started and realised how much testing is involved, i cant just quit cuz i need the job but i need to cover my --- and refresh myself quick!!!

An electrical danger notice would only be issued in extreme circumstances if an immediate and real danger was found, such as accessible exposed live parts,or a complete absence of earthing coupled with a low IR reading resulting in a voltage appearing on conductive parts etc.....other defects which were less serious would go on your PIR.
The NIC produce such a form, and I guess other schemes do as well....failing that your company or even yourself could produce your own.....make sure you keep copies of those you issue as proof.

EDIT Having read your above post I do think you need to have a serious think about it, a high level of experience and knowledge is required to carry out PIR's....and remember that whatever you recommend (or dont) is likely to have cost and perhaps safety implications for the recipient. You have to have the confidence to be able to justify your report.

cheers mate, the low insulation resistance i was getting want making any exposed parts live, but it was covered by an rcd so it was tripping, i couldnt find the fault and as it wasnt part of the flood so i just marked it as a fail on my sheet, iv still got the records with me, i havent given them in yet, do u think i should post a danger notice?

ye i know mate, i kind of got dropped in it, i was told there was no actual testing certs involved, i took their word for it, then wen i started the work i knew straight away it wasnt right, im gonna start looking elsewhere i think, being honest tho iv learnt loads this week!!
