Hi all,

I need some advice please from the experts on here. My cousin was having a problem with neusance tripping on a split board. He called a local sparks and he has removed the RCD's, installed a large buzz bar and linked the neutral bars using 6mm. I have questioned this and really need some advice on the safety of this?

Many thanks

I think he should of made the customer aware of the potential problems when upgrading to an rcd protected board, and the costs associated with any neccessary fault finding but i wouldnt agree that it isnt any safer im not going to get the regs book out and start looking at curves but a bsen 60898 is gonna trip faster than a bs 3036.... and also if it was a tt installaion it would of had a 100mA front end rcd anyway ;)

It's a tns system and has a 100 amp switch. I have told him the risk and has spoke to the bloke In question. He has said he will pop round next week. Will the mcbs protect the wiring (I am thinking fire risk now) if there were to be a problem. I am correct in saying that the Rcd protects the occupants while the mcb protects the circuit and wiring?

I'd tell him to get his backside round there right now and do the job he has been engaged to do properly and safely. If he is unable or unwilling, there are plenty of competent sparks about. Post up your location mate, one of our members will be near you.

to remove or bypass a RCD should only be considered as a stop-gap for 24 hours ( ish ) and the fault addressed ,corrected, and the RCD reinstated as a matter of urgency.

NO, not really. The old box was designed to accomodate and protect the circuits in the installation, the new box has been modifed against manufacturers instructions, the protective devices in it have very different characteristics depending on several other factors, and if the premises are supplied by what we call a TT system (as in, what the national grid push into the house) then the presence of an RCD is mandatory.
Yes and thanks for pointing this out Rockin as i was slagged off for mentioning the same thing about a week ago by a well known "selebrity" in here.....you know who you are............
