Hi,
Can you give me some advice on what to do next?
I have passed my 2330 to level 3 what’s my next step.
What course do I need to do to become a domestic electrician?
What course do I need to do to become a commercial electrician?
Cannot decide:6:

Thanks

Most of the scam providors like to see a 17th ed qual to join the scheme.

An inspection and testing qual would be a wise move also as it would make you more appealing to perspective employers.

Plenty of ELECTRICIANS!!! have set up with no qualifications what so ever but you will not be able to join one of he Approved persons groups as a competent person without your 17th ed. so you will be limited to minor works or getting notifiable works signed off by the local authority Building Inspectors which usually costs over £200 if you do it right.

Thanks Rare Breed thats what i thought I will do the 17th edition ASAP. After i passed where does that take me. do i stll need the building inspector to come around and check my work.. Its ridicules after 3 years of studying you would have thought we were competent to carry out electrical work

Yes you can carry work out on domestic installations but until you join a competent person scheme and be approved by them, you are not allowed to sign off non-minor domestic installations yourself to comply with part P of the building regulations, of course you do not need it to do commercial premises. I know some people will not join "Quote" the rip of merchants out of principle due to them not doing a lot for the £300+ fees, but you have to balance having to add the £200+ to your quotes and being priced out of the work by someone who can sign off their own work, or paying the annual fees. It might take 4 or 5 jobs to cover the membership fees back.

I was told by my tutor that to get approved status you have to be witnessed doing major works safely and competently, but this major works could be changing a consumer unit in your own home because this classes as major works by awarding bodies. Sounds good if you need to be in work to be witnessed but cant get work or your working and going to college at the moment and cant find the time. Your thoughts

Yes you can submit your own consumer unit for inspection by the assessor, or a garage, or wiring a house extension etc. But here comes the rub these major works are subject to the dreaded part P of the building regulations so you have to get the works signed off by some one who is competent prior to commission i.e. you don't want to leave somewhere vital without power waiting for the assessor to turn up. You also generally need two examples too show an assessor.
