hello

i am a new member and please forgive me if this is in the wrong section, i just need some advice about becoming a sparky. My story is that i am a serving soldier and i am due to come out in feb 2012 due to my girlfriend having a baby :) ive decided that becoming a electrician is the best route to go down and hopefully enroll on access training intensive electrician course in september. I know that the course will not make me a great electrician but hopefully gives me the basics. Is there anything i can do before the course like work placements to help me on my way or wait till after the course?? im willing to work for free so i get at least a bit of experience before coming into the big wide world , i just need hints and tips, also your experience if you been in a similar postion. Many thanks

Hello and congrats.

Like you said, hands on experience. Get your CV off to as many sparks/firms as you can find.

It's tough out there on the job front right now so be prepared for plenty of knock backs.

Hello mate welcome to the forum this is absolutely the best place to get all the advice you will ever need!! If you search the forum there are loads of posts and threads that deal with exactly what you want to know. A basic course is fine for the qualifications and bits of paper that you will need for domestic installation, but the hardest thing is the experience. I would suggest using contacts within the forces and friends of friends to gain a bit of practical knowledge and go from there. I would like to think being pusser you would have a head start in employment but its pretty hard going at the moment. Good luck.
