Ours doesn't have a contactor - just a vintage bakelite bodied switch. Probably electrified in the 70s as well.
Apparently our oil boiler was second hand back then when lecky arrived. Before that, "the lad" would stoke up the coke boiler the day before a service.
 
I should just like to say that the circuit arrangement that I mentioned is one that I have come across in the field. From what i remember the cables that went between the meter and the 3 phase switch fuse could have only been about 4mm2. The two distribution boards were Crabtree C50 boards so that might give an idea of age.

Another organ, a Compton Theatre one, had a three phase blower unit on it and it was quite a small system. Perhaps the unit with a single phase motor was fitted due to the lack of a three phase supply.
