hi quick question will my local electrical board update my supply to tn s or tnc s pme as the house is earthed on the mains water pipe i was going to make it a tt system but thought id just ask this quick

thanks

It is extremely unlikely that the property will rely solely on the water pipe for it's earth facility as this is somewhat frowned upon (understatement intentional guys)
If I were you I'd be proving to myself the presence or otherwise of a proper earth facility.
An upgrade may be available but it will be cheaper to TT it properly

its a very old property and has had a lot of diy work done to it there is no earth coming in and no earth rod the electrical system is approx 30 years old i located the only main earth and its on the water pipe i will check to see thanks if not available tt system it is thanks

When one of my customers enquired about an upgrade from TNS to PME they said they would gladly do it but it is chargeable work, they quoted him ÂŁ150 + vat

I hope he didn,t pay for that.
By the way, found a city terraced house with no earth whatsoever. Called the DNO, arrived within the hour and TNC'd it. No charge. Depends where you live, I suppose.

Sorry, typing error. tnp to pms, no err....tms to tsn, errm no, thats not right. It was ÂŁ150 anyway

They only PME a previously TN-S supply, when the lead sheath can no longer provide a suitably low resistance path back to the TX, normally because of corrosion. Other than that, it'll be TT systems that they are converting. Which was the original reason for the implementation of PME systems...

Not so. Round here in the villages a large proportion of houses have an overhead 2 wire supply and the vast majority have been converted to TN-C-S/PME. No problem getting a TT changed over - it just lightens the clients wallet by about ÂŁ150.

What do you mean ''Not So'' what's Not So??

As for the O/H supplies, that was the original intention, that the numerous O/H lines around the country be PME'd. It was always free of charge too, for donkey's years, right up until the privatisation of the leccy boards. Some still provide PME connections free of charge, depending on location and circumstances of the supply and installation.

The DNO's on the other hand are purely profit based, and tend to charge for every little thing these days, even though they bill you a standing charge on every leccy bill!! That standing charge, was supposed to pay for maintenance and repair/upgrades to your service!! ....And they call it ''Progress!!'' lol!!!

Unfortunately it’s profits before safety. We all know what should be done, BUT it’s not profitable to the companies to be safe unless their arm is twisted.

Providing a reliable earth point “should” be a part of a DNO’s responsibility at the point of supply. Not unreasonable to my mind.
We “should” have a perfect installation from every point of supply. (I know my place is up to scratch).

Then reality steps in! They won’t pay, and neither will we.

I’m waiting for the men in their white coats to come and take me away.
Or maybe they may take away the pink pigs that fly past my padded cell window. I hope not, I’m getting quite fond of them.
