A kind client offered to help take my tool bag down to his house while I took the materials
Unknown to me said Kind client also managed to snag the lead of my T100 on something, I only found out next day

Anyone know if I can open the thing up to shorten the lead or is it time to buy something else - maybe with a display readout this time

Yes you can, did exactly the same to mine a couple of months ago.
There is a small round plastic pin kind of thing on the back, pop this off and the tester casing slides apart, you will see the single core flex is soldered direct to the circuit board. You just need to un solder, cut the damaged cable and re solder takes 5 minutes.

Your Fluke T100 is repairable, in the manner suggested by ash. I repaired one for a mate about a month ago.
Two pole voltage detectors that indicate voltage in broad bands do not require calibrating, however, if you were to upgrade to a two pole voltage detector incorporating a discrete voltmeter it will require regular calibration, like any other meter, in order to ensure it's accuracy.

Exact same thing happened to mine a few years back

I opened up the case and managed to restrip the cabling inside and sit a through crimp neatly inside, all back together but this time clagged the point of entry with lots of sparky tape, so now the stress falls on the tape rather than the cable

Been fine ever since

Finally got time to have a look at my T100 - popped the front black button off and ripped the rear rubber cover off, found a button under it which has come apart but never use it anyway, still can't pull the case apart, should I peel more of the rubber away to find "the" plastic pin ?

It seperates in half by pulling on the top clear part which in turn reveals the leds on the voltage indication
