Thanks. Overall I am seemed to be drawn to the Megger MFT 1735, It appears to have pretty much every function going on it that I may require on my journey, the average price seems be just shy of a grand (or just over 1000 with accessory kits etc).

And yes I am going it alone as throughout as I have not been blessed with any apprentice work oppurtunities nor have friends or family in the trade.

So whatever kit I choose I hope is right :).

P.S. 17th wiring regs update cource day 1 tomorrow.

Regards

Jamie.

its a waste of money getting the 1735 if your just starting out.

you can get a very good tester for half that

Gosh that's a lot of money. :)

It's very easy to be swayed by "feature lust." You don't need most of the stuff on there. The 1735 came out, what, less than a year ago? How did people manage before then?

There are several manufacturers of test equipment suitable for the UK market. Prices are therefore competitive. By all means, buy "quality" but don't mistake "features" for "quality". (Off-topic: similar for many domestic appliances, e.g. washing machines. An ÂŁ800 Hotpoint is no better built than a ÂŁ300 Hotpoint).

Questions you should be asking: will the "no loop trip" randomly add an ohm or so to your readings for certain types of RCD? (that might steer you towards, or away from, certain manufacturers)

Is it absolutely essential that you have the ability to take a no-trip Zs reading without a neutral (ie 2-wire no-trip loop)? (That might steer you towards a certain manufacturer).

Another way of thinking about it is: For the price of an all-singing, all-dancing MFT, could you also buy a cheap MFT, then separates for the functions you don't require that often (earth electrode tester, phase rotation tester)? And finally, how gutted would you feel if your ÂŁ1000 pride and joy got smashed/nicked, vs how gutted would you feel if your ÂŁ400 does-the-job got smashed/nicked?

Ah yes, the alternative Zs method! I thought all my Christmases had come at once, when I learnt that! :)

Would cheaper alternative machines still be reliably accurate when it comes to things such as ultra low resistence measurements?

Regards

Jamie

No, in fact none of the MFTs out there are suitable for ultra low resistance measurements. You would need a microhmmeter for such measurements

Have a look at Test-Meters web site for MFT's. 17th Edition Multifunction Testers and Part P Test Equipment

Great set of lads and very helpful. Plus you get a discount when you a are a member of this forum!

A few months ago I went to their office/workshop for my mft calibration. They offered me to come and see what it entailed and went through the full process with me. You dont get that level of service from many these days.

for low measurements i will always turn to a good quality multimeter.

my fluke 175 multimeter has a lot larger scale.

try measuring a resistor with an mft and see how useful that is.

an mft has an accuracy of +/-5% so in other words no two testers will read the same in identical conditions

Happysteve makes a valid,salient point,but....

...And i preface the following with an admission of kit-obsession...and a less than conventional upbringing...

My reasons for saying your leaning towards the 1735 is fine, are tri-fold...

1) The manufacturer chosen has quality equipment, and excellent follow-up...

2) If the OP makes it his business,to master ALL of the machines capabilities, including the understanding of results, much can be added to the experience bank...

3) And finally,at the age i am guessing he is,there are many things his equals will be spending a similar amount of money on.
From memory,i have seen the cost of a 1735,spent on Tattoos, holidays, internet poker, and an engagement ring for a strumpet, making a depreciating item like an MFT,look like a positive investment!

An X-BOX may be expensive. All your pals may even have one. But i've never met anyone who has earned a penny with one...:icon12:

Buy the best MFT you can reasonably afford without putting yourself in debt. There is no need to go for the top of the range models, what you're after is a reliable MFT that fulfils all the tests listed/required by BS 7671. The units with all the toys can come later. ...lol!!
