All the lights in the house have suddenly stopped working. Believe my wife tried to switch on on, and can't say what fuse box looked like after as she dealt with it first. Have tried re-setting rcd switch and light switch, though that is complicated. We had an extension a year ago and the one that says lights doesn't as far as I'm aware work the lights anymore. A new switch was added dead centre, which to the best of my knowledge works the lights. I'm adding a photo if possible. Anyone got any ideas at all please. Don't really want to be going round taking off every light and switch, when I haven't a clue where to look. Some lights do flicker, others do nothing at
all. Any help really appreciated. The switch to the left of centre is the one that was added and works lighting.

Clap trap

There are tens of thousands of mixed boards in the UK in service, growing by number by the day ....

Who is going to police this !

And none of them will be fully compliant with the product standards. This is not about BS7671 or the people who form the committee which wrote it, it is the EN standards which CUs are manufactured to.

510.3 "...shall take account of manufacturer's instructions" therefore a CPD is only BS7671 compliant in isolation, or in a suitable board, but not in another manufacturer's board, which would contravene the manufacturer's instructions.
only if under warranty . think ten year down the line then .

And been ignored by thousands of sparks for a very long time ...

Very true. And tbh there is a difference between an MCB that is clearly forced in and one that fits.

Also, knowledgeable sparks know what fits....

Loadstar and Wylex NSB......identical fit

Merlin Gerin Multi 9 and MK Sentry.....identical fit

Breaking capacity can differ so need to be careful of that

I also know that those MEM Eaton have an RCD module that converts the MCB to an RCBO. MCB and module need to purchased separately.

I would always try to fit correct make but I would not replace a DB if nothing else but another make was available, which fitted correctly and breaking capacity was suitable.

Invalidating a product warranty is small fish.
Knowingly taking a shortcut against the regs could have far greater adverse consequences in the event of the aftermath of a fire.
I wouldn't want to be the one standing up in court trying to justify it
if fitted correctly then their is not a problem.so if you can not find a match for the board do just rip it out and put in a new board for the sake of a no compatible mcb .

I'm in the don't do it camp. :)

Of course you could probably find some similar device that has the same dimensions, manufactured by someone else that would fit perfectly in there. But presumably the manufacturers go through some testing regime to ensure their products are suitable and fit for purpose and within tolerances.

Guess you could come up with some risk assessment, to show you have investigated and tested the non compatible device is within tolerances and won't cause problems in the future. Submit your risk assessment with your certificate.

Sometimes even the manufacturer hasn't a suitable replacement device. But IMO thats not the sparks problem, the customer will just have to pay for some remedial work, if they want an alteration or addition.

In this case, as said there's a simple remedy, with an RCD field kit (if that is Memera 2000 CU etc). Ain't cheap, about £120 last time I fitted one.

Can't understand why try bother fitting a round peg in a square hole.
