Hi has any one got any info on this stuff? It's solid stranded aluminium cored PVC t & e,
I've not come across it before. circuit I am working is bigger than 6mm but smaller than 10mm guess it's an imperial size.
i am after a CCC for the cable if anyone has any ideas?
house was built mid -50s

Thanks

sam

Sorry cant help you m8
But when we had a copper shortage years ago everyone was installing aluminum cable tinned with copper, but I do not ever remember seeing specs for it, only thing I remember was you had to go up a size for it to work ie 1.5 would be 2.5 , 2.5 would be 4mm etc etc

The only ally T&E cables i know of that have been used since i've been in the game was the copper clad Ally cables in the 70's and they were only around for a very short period of time. There definitely weren't to my knowledge any Ally T&E around in the 50's, but almost every copper cable conductor was tinned in those days (eg in the 50's ....

There is a very good reasons why Ally cables, (especially of the small CSA) are not used for general wiring..... Although very common in larger sized distribution cables and the like, and used extensively by the DNO's... Personally i've always considered Aluminium cables as ultimately a false economy in most situations...

Hi thanks for all the replies, apologies but my 1st post is confusing, I meant that the cable is solid cored, has only one strand per core if that makes sense.
Cable is on a oven/hob circuit in a kitchen that I am doing some minor works in, new Ib for this circuit is 30amps with diversity applied.

cheers

Was asked to move, add a few socket's in a kitchen before Christmas.

The guy had just purchased it, when I came to cooker cable it looked like it was 10-16mm?

Was really flexible, so stripped it back , and it was pure alloy as was rest of house.

Done a few I/R tests Zs tests , and basically passed , but was unsure.

Done a bit of research, and as was said previously used in 70's for only a few years in domestic property's, due to copper shortage.

Apparently a fire risk because cable oxidises when exposed to air in a domestic fitting, and can cause high resistance/ heat /fire.

Used in other application's other than domestic, but with waterproof/grease filled terminals to avoid air ingress.(i read this)

Guy next door said his insurance was void, unless he re-wired,as he had done years earlier.

Also building inspector came out to pass off an RSJ we had fitted, and advised the guy to re-wire it also!

Bottom line, the owner read a bit on net, and asked me to rewire total house, so result !-

If you look up on net it basically says fire risk , so your client might do well to have a look themselves .

Might get a nice job.
