hi all

just had word from my employer that myself and colleagues need to buy a copy of the amended regs out of our own pocket. surely this is a business related expense, and be reimbursed if they want us to have it, they say its part of our tool kit.
if anyones had similar requests or knows a bit about the law in these cases please give us some advice.

thanks

That's right - if you're employed, any business related expense that your employer won't reimburse you for is tax deductable. There's a box on the self assessment for it.

Ring the tax office mate im sure you can claim it back, I did with mileage driving to get to my works van even tho i was on the books, It was a long time ago but i sure there were other things you could claim for.

HMIT will allow you a “tool allowance” if you have to buy your own tools. It’s about £500 a year with a depreciation rate of 50%! The BGB will come within the scope of “tools” so for every £100 you spend the first year you claim back £50, second year £25. But bear in mind this is cumulative so the second year you buy another £100 of tools, you’re tax offset is £150

Watch out if you get a “tool allowance” in your pay. One company I worked for claimed the “tool allowance” but didn’t pass it on to us! The cheeky *******s even tried to get us to pay for a new lathe out of our pockets! Their argument being you get the “tool allowance” now it’s time you all spent it! We didn’t get it in our pay packet! They had one hell of a back pay issue when it all came to light!

In 10 year of business I paid £23 tax, but my ex wife was a tax inspector.
