Discuss am I the only one double over tails in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

I may be wrong here, but aren't most if not all devices used in CU/DB these day's clamp type connections?? I can't say i've seen a direct screw termination on MCB's, RCD/RCBO's, Main Isolators etc for years now!! Never seen anyone try to double over 16/25mm and over tails, far better to use crimped connectors. Seen the likes of solid core 1, 1.5, 2.5mm doubled at OCD's, and 4, 6mm etc stranded.

All our connections within Final distribution boards, are crimped ferrule connections along with most of the other projects i've been involved on, so i may be talking out of turn here ...lol!!

What you can do if your terminating into a screw terminal with a smallish cable, and what I was taught to do, strip the tail as normal and wind horizontally along the conductors a piece of single core 2.5mm, in essence your using the 2.5mm to bind the cables together and increasing the CSA on the termination.

This gives you a snugger fit, and stopped the splaying on the cable.

Good tip!

When terminating tails I always tighten to normal tightness then rock the tail enough to just flex it then retighten. This settles the strands and you usually get another half a turn on the terminal. Always worked for me.

I always put ferrules on smaller sizes of stranded, I tend to find it just makes for a better connection in every sense.

Only really seem to come across them at the Esco's, used many different makes of them and not come across any that aren't a screw termination.
