I have my AM2 booked soon and had a few questions

What multifunction tester is provided or does it vary between am2 centres?

I am doing preparation course online so i am just wondering if the installation is going to be the same layout or similar

Im covering all sections of fault finding and testing on the AM2 prep
on the AM2 does the assessor make sure you cover all the sections or are they chosen at random?
Do they create a fault on one or two circuits ? or do i need to run through all the circuits with a multi meter explaining how to find short or open circuits ?

Should have been covered during your course tuition, if you attended all of the lectures, asking questions during the course is best, not leaving it till the last minute on an internet forum.

When I did my AM2, the MFT was a Kewtech... didn't like it at all.

On the fault finding section, the faults are picked at random... they set them up and give you the fault details. The detail will include the affected circuit, so it's not like 'my board is tripping' and you have to look at everything.

you are given at least 3 major brand multifunction testers.
all the AM2 installations are identical.
the fault finding is done as follows:

1 the assessor is told what fault to switch on, you cannot see the switch.
2. you are given a description of a fault ie: the breaker trips when the central heating is called for. This gives you the area to look in ie the solar thermal system.
you will be given a total of 7 faults in total which you are supposed to find in the order you are given. Your answer should identify the fault, where it is and what you would do to rectify it. the assessor does not pick the faults as he is given them by NET.
the fault finding is done after you have carried out safe isolation as it is done dead. good luck

I was also curious about what MFT they would provide it is definitely reassuring knowing you get a selection rather than turning up and "here is your tester" only to be something totally alien to you.

Ed Evans - would you first tackle the faults making sure you have continuity from DB to the said area on all conductors/cpc & then if yes move on to using other testing methods if you cannot find the fault e.g I.R testing etc

@Ed Evans ,

Test centres are not obliged to provide a choice of manufacturers when it comes to test equipment. They are only obliged to provide a certain number of devices for a given number of bays. I had no choice... if I had a choice between say Megger and Kewtech or Fluke and Kewtech... I would have opted to use the Megger or Fluke.

The AM2 test centre specification only states the equipment they must provide... it does not stipulate candidates must have a choice.

Don't expect a choice of test equipment. See my post above and read the test centre specification document. It tells you what centres are obliged to provide. Don't expect it to be the best quality either, the tool kits get alot of abuse.

As for the fault finding... I would go straight for a test that is the most appropriate for the fault. You can assume everything else is perfect apart from the fault you are trying to find.

Ah I see, sorry I misread, thanks for the information sparky its always nice to learn as much info as possible.
I guess when the time comes I would enquire about what mft they use not keen on the kewtech like yourself
I definitely need to get some practice in the fault finding department before even booking the am2.
