hi can anybody explain to me what is the AM2 test for, when do i need it if i really need to have it passed?
has anybody gone through it?
was it hard?
thanks

ive not done it myself it is more important if you want to go down the commercial route as you need it before they will give you nvq level 3 to get a jib rating as a sparks. its a week long in college practical assessment. if you want to get on the bigger commercial sites you want it if you're more into doing your own domestics then dont worry

I heard they are getting rid of the MICC(PYRO) and the 3 phase motor, they are now classed as specialist and replacing with SY cable but this wont be instigated until next year.

I did mine about 20 years ago as well and it was for end of apprenticship testing all you had done . If you didnt pass you didnt get an craftsman cert. Not sure how hard it is now though

The AM2 test is designed to prove that you can turn theory into practice, as there are plenty out there who can fly through written exams etc but come to practicle on-site work they show a lack of understanding just like they learned and passed in a 'parrot fashion' way. So it holds a viable step to ensure that the right people can progress to been fully qualified electricians.
As for if its difficult or not then i can only say its a confidence and on-site experience thing those who can turn theory into practice shouldn't have a problem.

So if i wanted to be self employed, would i not need the AM2 to become a domestic only sparky? thats all i want to do.

not required for domestiv installer. call niciec and they will talk you through what is needed
