Hi, 3 or 4 years ago, our 2012 LG American fridge freezer had an issue where something was blocked and it wasn't freezing properly. I can't remember exactly what the problem was but in the process of removing the interior rear panels, some of the spongey material came away (photo attached). Since then we've had situations where we get a noisy fan due to the ice which had built up and came in contact with the blades, and all over the aluminium pipes and fins, sometimes it's just annoyingly noisy and can get to the stage where ice prevents the fan rotating completely, then we get intermittent thawing until ice melts and the fan can continue to work again.

To date, I must have had the panels off to remove ice 8-10 times, it's a pain as I have to empty the whole freezer, and a serious amount of ice has to be removed. Each time, more and more of the spongy material comes loose and discarded and I'm assuming it's the increasing lack this (some sort of cooling insulation?) which is allowing frost to build up where it shouldn't do?

Last night when removing ice I thought maybe cut my loses and buy a new appliance as it's 12 years old now but at £1500-2000 it's a big spend when it's working fine when between ice build up!

My question is, is this lack of spongy material what's actually causing the ice build up and if so, can it be bought to refit where it should be, and exactly where should it be anyway, as I've long since forgotten where all the various parts were stuck to over the years. Maybe there's a replacement kit of this stuff available?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like the auto defrost heating element has failed

You can test it with an ohmmeter rather than a voltmeter, if you can identify its connections. Note that there is likely to be a couple of other defrost elements connected in parallel to the main defrosting element that will need to be isolated from it.
I've recently repaired the auto defrost of one of my own fridge freezers, a job which took much longer and cost much more than it should have, because of an error in the circuit diagram glued to the back of it, so assume nothing.
